Sunday evening Dr. Gillilan said in his sermon while speaking of kings ancient and modern: "The an cient kings were monopolists. They (wanted the whole of the world to ! themselves. They sent out their armies to conquer, capture, kill and exploit everywhere. If they did not establibh ! a protectorate over the. countries con quered they planned a system of tri ' bute taking so that everything possible , was coined into money for their treas uries, to feed their desires. , Then, the business of the captain was to drive the ottsn unwilling troops with whips and goads as d'd Xerxes his Persians in Thermopylae b day. That was in the time of the abso lute, unresisted monarch, the days of acknowledged barbarism. Now, in our days cf superior enlightenment, " in ! clays and time of boasted freedom, men rare kings; , whosoever will (or can! f may ' proclaim himself lord of some industry. He may be steel magnate, PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS are set to the task of accumulating dollars for the treasuries of the mod ern masters. So nearly 1b the wage earner unrequited that he is often the poorer &t the close of the year than when the year began. But, see how civilized we are today! Instead of the dreadful captain .of industry harrying the lagging footsteps of the anaemic army of . underfed thousands wnth spears, goads and whips, they are urg ed on by the cries of wives never rest ed and by the wails of babes ever hun gry. The whips are the broken and lacterated heart-strings of loved ones; but it Is a battle nevertheless. The rapacious money maker must have his desire no matter at whose cost. He cap give an endowment for a college or e can provide an organ or a li brary for an institution eleemosynary or religious and have a lot of unthink ing preachers laud him to the' skies while he plans another means of en tering Grsece.
