This Is right. We have needed A congressman distinct from Portland Influences, for there Is little In com mon between Portland and Eastern ', Oregon., - ' , ; Mow, that there Is to be a new congressman, the people should use due care In the nomination of the can didate. Oregon has not been long on congressional timber In the past, in fact the delegation from this state has lot been sufficiently active to attract attention, and It is a good opportunity for a capable man from Eastern Or' ,gon to show his metal. . "y But there are congressmen and con gressmen. Mediocrity marks the ma , Jorlty of men sent to ihe lower house. probably, a vacation trip is a good thing, for it loosens up the tircula ing medium and causes a few extra dol lars to find their way into the current money of each community. .-; But for the ordinary citizen who Is in good heal.h always seemed like a huge Joke to us. Nothing is more irk some than to see a big, able bodied man lolline around a summer resort Think of what he could accomplish in the harves: field or lumber camp. It is fortunate the vacation microbe does not strike all classes alike and become general, for if that were trus, who would do the work these warm summer days? Who would run the engines that Dull the trains earrvt these excursionists, who would cut the choice beefsteaks and make the bread that feeds ' the vacationists? Who would garner, the crops and get Jn the winter's wood. The people who do this work are the backbone of the country. While those who scout around in Pullman cars and decry the temperature, who complain at dining car service, which la far better as a rule than they are used to at home, who yawn and gape because no new book has lately been j written to take their fancy, may ion f lAtna tnmidv vp thpv Amount trt as little as the small red ant iwneu n comes to doing things In the world. , MAY CLOSE HUNTING SEASON. The danger of forest fires through carelessness on the cart of hunter is now belna considered In Oregon. Too much Is at stake when the standing timber Is In Jeopardy to let a pleasure free handed into the bills and carelessly start fires at will. In view of this fact the chief executive has almost agreed to close the hunting season In this state. The following circular has been sent out along this line, -; , ,' The open season for hunting deer as well as a number or otner animais and game birds, began August 1 and State Fores.er F. A. Elliott has nis ear to the ground for reports of forest fires started through the carelessness we hope the people will rise above the j 0f hunters.
