there was a decrease of about 1,000,000
sheep In the North Atlantic division. In

south central division the decrease

change. 10,069,451 being reported In
1910. or only some 14,000 more than In

The department of agriculture has

were 1,116 buffalo in captivity In the
United States, and of these a conslder

falo census showg an actual increase
of about 200. The largest herds now
in private hands are at Belvedere,
Kana.; Ronan, Mont.; Newport, N. H.;
Pawnee, Okla.; Goodnight, Tex.; and
on Antelope Island, Great Salt Lake.
Stopping Customs Leak.
Tor many years, according to the
customs officials, the government has
been losing large .sums of money an
nually because the Importers of Sicil
ian lemons did not pay duty on all the
sound fruit they imported. When Col
lector Loeb discovered this leak the
authorities set about the making of
re gulatlons which would top the leak.
Tluey finally decided to base the
amount of rotten fruit, (on which the
customs duties are remitted), on the
samples Bhown by the importers to
the trade. The secretary of the treas
ury approved this plan, but the Ira
porters protested that it was not fair.
"Why not?" askfd Secretary McVeagh.
The importers could make no satlsfac-
tory reply, so the order stands, and the
government will save much money.
