Grande Ronde and Wallowa valliea are producing the largest and best crop of sugar beets since the factory as Installed In La Grande, according to a report given to President David Kccles of the Amalgamated Sugar com i pany, who was in La Grande yesterday conferring with General Manager F. S. , Bramwell. Mr. Eccles left last night highly pleased with conditions in this ad Wllowa counties and Mr. Bram well is likewise pleased at the signs of satisfaction given by the president of the company. " The com pany will also harvest about 100,000 bushels of grain. New Bishop of Dallas. Dallas, Texas, July 17. Distinguish ed churchmen from many dioceses to day attend the consecration of Rev. oseph P. Lynch as Roman Catholic bishop of Dallas, in succession to the late Bishop Dunne. The solemn ser vice was held In the cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The conse crating prelate was Archbishop Blenk of New Orleans, who was assisted by Blsh pMorrls of Little Rock and Bish op Gllagher of Galveston. The ser mon was preached by the Very Rev. Michael S. Ryan, president of Kenrick seminary, St. Louis. At the conclusion of the ceremony the visiting prelates and priests were entertained at dinner at the Oriental hotel. The Right Rv. Joseph P. Lynch, the new bishop of Dallas, was born near Chicago, in 1873. and early in his ca reer he was engaged in the practice of law. Deciding to enter the church he took a theological course at Kenrick seminary and was ordained a priest about 11 years ago. After his ordina tion he became attached to the Dallas diocese and a year ago was made vicar general. He has been the active bish op since the death of Bishop Dunne. . Kiddle Slightly Better. Clyde Kiddle Is reported today as im proving by slow degrees. His condition Is all thta could be expected at this time. Mr. Kiddle was operated upon a few days ago for appendicitis. Union,, July 17. (Special) Joha Spain and Henry McOrath have given bonds In the sum of $2,000, pending their trial on a charge of horse steal ing. The third of the group indicted at La Grande late Saturday evening, known as Gibe Morris, could not meet the bonds and Is now In Jail at La Grande. All are well known In Union county, Mr. Splan having become par ticularly well known because of his abilities as a bad horse tamer. -With the return of the fourth Indict ment late Saturday afternoon, which Union men with horse rustling, the grand Jury has taken a recess until Is be lieved the Jurors will be called to-i gether again and circuit court opened dlctment has not been made public but it Is thought the men accused will be arrested this afternoon and perhaps arraigned tomorrow or the day after. The men indicted Saturday forenoon were not given opportunity to plead this morning as originally announced. The pleadings will be held probably at a nearby date. SPANISH LAW. When returning to their ships ' they were attacked by China men. The American struck one of tbe Chinamen on the head with a stick, and the man died. The Spanish au thorities did not trouble to discrimi nate, bat sentenced the three men to two years' Imprisonment . . The Brltlsb consul, being unaccus tomed to Spanish ways, took up the case of the Englishman very strongly. The authorities thereupon, possibly to teach him a lesson, tried the men over again and gave them twenty yearn each. The Englishman after three years in a Cuban prison, during which time bis companions died of yellow fever, was transferred to Ceuta to serve the re mainder of his time. After some years he and a fellow prisoner, a Spaniard, escaped, but they were recaptured. The food provided In the convict prison of Ceuta consists of two meals a day of garbauzos chick peas occasionally flavored with a tiny bit of salt pork, a remarkably healthy If not appetizing diet, and the Englishman came out of prison in particularly good health.
