West can not be given a new trial in her suit against the Mu tual Life Insurance company to re cover money on a policy held by her husband prior to his. suicide at Baker some years ago. Her appeal for a new trial presented to Judge Knowles soon after a circuit court Jury' here gave her a small sum, approximately $300, was denied today by Judge Knowles. West, who was at one time connect ed with the Observer, went to Baker, and becoming despondent committed suicide by the morphine route In the Crabill hotel. Though a special session of the grand jury has been under way! for two days, no report has been made and none Is expected until late tomor row, it is said about the court house that the inquisitors are going to keep "hammering'" away at witnesses be fore deliberating or taking time to prepare reports. Williams, wife and three -children were burned to death at Ruby Lake yesterday. , Mr. Williams poured gaso- lline in the cracks of. the floor to kill bugs. Fol lowing a fist fight engaged in last night William Melnecke; early today shot and fatally wounded Dallas Mar quis, a hack driver and then blew out his own brains. Melnecke was ar rested by Patrolman Wilcox but re fused to surrender his gun. As the of ficer and prisoner entered, the police station Melnecke slipped the revolver from his pocket, and killed himself. ', Marries Jhlrd Generation. ' Salem, July 13. When Rev. P. S. Knight last night performed the mar riage ceremony, uniting Hugh and Nina Mack he established a record. Avery, charged with operating in high finan cial circles by floating alleged forged city Improvement bohds and with Is suing worthless checks, was arrested today at Harrison, Idaho, by detectives from this city. Avery's operations ane said to extend to several cities, includ ing Portland, Spokane and Salt Lake. Long Race for Motor Boats, New York, July 13. All arangs ments have been concluded for the power boat race which is to be start led tomorrow afternoon from Hunting ton, Long island, with Marblehead, Mass., as the objective point. The race will cover a distance of 240 nau tical miles. The contest will be con fined to boats of not less than 30 feet over all, and not exceeding in the greatest length, 40 feet on deck.
