nounced by the Cove Commercial club.

and a dance in the evening will close

Cove managers have put the various
events In sucn arrangement that there
will be entertainment at all times and
visitors will not tonly get a fine few
of the cherries and other fruits but
will be entertained in numerous ways.

Admiral Conily Retires
Washington, D. C, July ,13. After
45 years of honorable service, filled
with adventure and Interesting ex
periences in many partg of the world,
Rear Admiral Samuel P. Comly was
placed on the retired list of the navy
today on account of age. Admiral
Comly is a native of New Jersey and
entered the naval academy at An
napolis from that state in 1865. Early
In bis career he accompanied the fam
ous Juniata expedition to theArctlu.
During the war with Spain he. was an
officer on the battleship Indiana, and
participated In the naval engagement
at Santiago. - HIS last duty was as
commandant of the navy yard at Phil
adelphia. .' '

Yesterday was a splendid day in
the rapidly rising tide of affairs at
Chautauqua. Not only was everything
lse an unequivocal success, but the
V. C. T. U. services were good. There
was a eolo by Miss Perrlne of Island
City, a reading by Miss Christine
Wheatly of this city and an address by
Dr. Gillilan on the meaning of the
words. "Woman," "Christian," "Temp-ranee"
and "lTn!on." it was well
received. Last night the Williams Jub
ilee singers had a fine, large, enthusi
astic crowd to which they played in
an unsurpassed manner. They are as
finei people and as perfect artists as
ever La Grande has had.
