LaGrande Oregon Considerable excitement and specu lation has been caused during the last few days in the city and adjacent towns pf the Grande Ronde valley by the report that Grant Lincoln and jllert Hughes of the State saloon hava arranged for a unique contest on the j 4ib of July between a Philippino duck and an English bull terrier. Hughes ' asserts that the "duck ' was brought ; from the Philippines by Captain Har- rlson ot the 16th cavalry and stands, when upright, 39 inches high. Captain Harrison has the duck in training and will back his entry to defy and best any dog of 56 pounds weight to draw the duck outside of a 12-foot ring. , The duck is fed on raw meat, and from all accounts of those who nave seen the bird he is certainly fero cious. He has been trained to use his bill or beak, or, as Hughes calls k, his "mouth" with deadly effect upou all dogs he has hitherto been matched I against. The Fourth of July commit J tee have not yet been approached on the matter of a public contest but as soon as Captain Harrison arrives In town with the. bird, negotiations will be entered upon with a view to hold the contest during our week of fes tivities.
