By reason of tiz connection with the boycott against the Bucks Stove and Range company he was sentenced to serve a year In Jail, but re cently the supreme court of the United States reversed the lower tri bunal, and Mr. Gompers now has no incarceration to face. He as serted the National Irrigation con gress', which has its 19tti annual sea sessions here Dec. 5 to 9, has been the leading organization in creating public opinion in behalf of this work. ; Calling attention to the fact that many j arid areas which are now practically worthless can be made to support the densest rural population through ir rigation, he said: "With the settlement of practically all of the public lands which will pro duce crops without Irrigation, the ne cessity arises of utilizing those vast arid regions which can be made pro ductive by this artificial supply of the needed moisture for vegetation, in stead of merely Improving the land, it transforms it from the. most worth less to the. most valuable and fruit ful land" in the world, - and areas which were incapable of supporting a single family have been made and can be made capable of supporting the densest agricultural population of any part of the country, j - r , .
