It la the policy of this paper, as
all readers know, to encourage every
thing that will legitimately and hon
estly bring people to thla city even
for one day. , The Idea la to keep
something doing of Interest
and La Grande will have it.
If there is a celebration due let La
Grande hold it; If a county fair, lft
La Grande get In and urge it to com
pletion, for that Is what makes a live
dty.
This season's slate Is very well
made. We start with a grand old 4th
of July celebration, followed ten days
with a Chautauqua gathering which

world for our people. An aviation
meet Is also slated, if the guarantee
is raised today, and then will come
the county fair, which is to be a fair
of the. highest order and beet attain
ments. - ;
Honesty of purpose has marked ev
ery event. La Grande is not adver
tising anything she will not have. If
the aviation meet goes through it
mean every, admhssion will be re
funded at the gate provided there is
no flight, thus giving no chance for
swindling the people. The Commer
cial Hub will be behind this venture ,
and every purchaser of a ticket can
rest in the full assurance that the
honor of that body is at stake and no
money will be kept unless Mr. Walsh
actually flies. That he will there Is
no doubt, for If the first day is stormy I
he will fly on the second and stayl
over a third day to make good. ,
The airship is something new and
it will be worth coming miles to see
a man flying around the city as he
will do. Under no consideration will
there be any chance for a swindle,
Thl is impressed upon the mind be
cause of the number of fakes that have
been pulled off in Eastern Oregon re
garding airships.
The Four of July celebration Is now
arranged. It will be pulled off .ac
cording t0 schedule and there will be
nothing but a square deal alf the way
through. A for the Chautauqua there
is little need of assuring the people
that it will be as advertised, for all
talent is under contract and will ap
pear. And right here ij Is well to
state that the chautauqua board , has
contracted the best that is obtainable.
No chautauqua In the west will have
more elaborate entertainment, and It
will be worth coming a long ways to
hear.

Governor West has seen fit to leave
the state house and Join In a hunt for
crlminal8 who escaped from the peni
tentiary. There are many ways to ac
complish things, and too, perhaps the
governor felt rather conscious strick
en because of his free use of the pa
role of late.
Criminals of the worst type are de
veloping In the west, but probably the
meanest of them all ig the real e&tata
shark who works the confidence game
on the public. If there is no statute
to punish such men let a special dis
pensation be granted and one enacted
for immediate use.
North Powder reports a heavy straw
berry crop this year and people there
are scouring the country for picker3.
North Powder cans ice in the winter
and strawberries in the summer.

Editor Observer: I see in your pa
per that La Grande Is to have a cele
bration In the ciiy. I would like to
know why you do not hold thecele
bration in your park. You have a
beautiful park with grand old trees,
plenty of shade, green grass and city
water and the added beauty of cool,
running stream winding dreamily
along the bank. Would not this be
better than the hot blistering pave
ment and narrow cement walks with
the hot, sweltering sun beating down
on the heads of the unlucky crowd.
In our sister town of Pendleton the
business men would not agree to have
