More than 1,000,000 acres' of cut-over
timber lands in eastern Washington
and Oregon, north and central Idaho
and western Montana will be cleared
and settled by small farmers and
home builders during the next few
years, with the carrying of the plan
practically agreed upon by prominent
lumber manufacturer and commercial
clubs of the Inland Empire.
Every, precaution will be taken. to
keep the lands from falling into the
hands of speculators, the purpose be
ing to sell at the lowest price to ac
tual settlers, who will develop their
holdings and thug add to the wealth
production of the nation,

of the Phoenix Lumber company of
Spokane, who first brought the plan
of developing the vast, acreages of
logged-over lands In this territory to
the attention of the Spokane chamber
of commie rce, has been successful In
Interesting many boards of trade and
similar organizations In the move
ment. Joined with these forces aye the
transcontinental railroads and timber
concerns throughout the northwest.
Development agents in the employ
of the railroads also have thoroughly
investigated the possibilities of the
lands in the districts, and their re
ports bear out the statement that soil,
climate and market conditions are
nearly Ideal for fruit, grain, hay, dairy
ing and hog and poultry growing.

incoming trains still continue to bring
large numbers of delegates and visi
tors to this city, the numerical success
of the 13th triennial convention of the
International Sunday School associa
tion, which opened here today to re
main In session one week, is already
assured, ' it Is safe to say that the
present convention Is the largest ever
held in this country. It is expected
that at the opening general meeting
tomorrow fully 4,600 regular delegates,
representing the 262,000 . Sunday
schools cf the United, States and Can
ada, will be In attendance.
As this Is the first time in the his
tory of the association that its trien
nial convention. Is held w-:et of the
Rocky mountains, tb ; peope of the Pa
ciflc coast states, from San Diego to
Victoria,- have taken' unusual interest

city is handsomely decorated in honor
of the Sunday school ; workers and
