Detailed .descriptions of the Eastern
Star drill team's meritorious perform
ance at Portland last week, are given
to the Observer by two well known
Eastern Star members, Jessie S. Vert,
past worthy grand matron and Robert
A, Miller, past grand patron. Their
description follows: - 'I4
' Immediately after the exempliflca'
tion ' of the ritualistic work by the
grand officers, they vacated the floor
and to the strains of music Hope chap
ter entered the chapter room. I -y
' Dr. Lincoln, the worthy patron, es
corted the worthy matron, Miss Carrie
B. Hunter to the east and Miss Wilma !
Rinehart to the piano.
; The ,25 ladies gowned beautifully
but simply in cream silk mull were
greeted with great applause from the
large audience assembled In the grand
pie, as they entered. They wore white
shoes and their only decoration was a
large corsage bouquet of pink roses,
presented to them by the ladles of the
Portland chapters. ; , f , y .
The team was composed of the fol
lowing ladies: Dora B. Schilkie, com
poser and instructor, Wilma Rinehart,
organist, Meadameg C. T. Bacon, Frank
Jackson, H. C. Grady, M. K. Hali, Mac
Wood, John Wade, A. B. Cherry, C. E.
Cochran, Chas. Noyes, Col li Eberhard,
Lew Given, C. E. Dunn, Pete Beiver,
Perry Oliver, L. M. Hoyt, C. M. Lock
wood, N. Molitor; and the Misse Bess
Bohnenkamp, Stella Black, Ethel Mc
Kennon, Bertha Berger, Cynthia Stine
and Mabel Van Fleet. t ;, '
Upon the entrance of the 1? officers,
the floral degree was conferred upon
Worthy Grand Matron Jennie G. Rine
hart as a mark of honor. . - "
The additional 12 then entered the
chapter room and Joining with the
floral team for almost an hour cre
ated an enthusiasm which called for
encore after ncore from the large as
semblage of Eastern Stars for their
military appearance while marching
and counter marching and forming the
following symbolic figures:
; Hope 13, O. E. S.," "Scrolls and Dou
ble Scrolls,'' ! "Triangles." ;"Double
Labyrinth," "Cabalistic" and all signs
of the order and "Rinehart." The 12
officers then formed an unchor In the
east, symbolic of the "anchor of hope."

pleting the number "13" which allud
ed to the number of the chapter and ' Kansas City
amid shouts of joy and enthusiasm,
presented before the grand chapter of
tthe order of the O. IS. 8. of Oregon
where they were hailed as the most
beautiful collection of ladle who have
ever appeared la one body within the
confines of our great beauty producing
state. .. ' -
Mrs. Schllke and Miss Rinehart have
Ingratiated themselves with the Port
land people and those who. were for
tunate in being present from other
parts; of ..the -state.' with their, able
leadership and power producing ef
fect of enthralled musical strains.
We consider It as a whole a great
success and La Grande should be
proud of her representative ladles who
have so nobly done them ) and re
member them with kindness and every
courtesy possible.

and every one who helped to show ua
the good time at Portland and Gear
hart park.
I know we all appreciated the kind
ness shown us by the management
at the Hot Lake sanatorium.
We were treated very kindlr at ths
Imperial hotel and the banquets given
at the different places were greatly
enjoyed by all, as also were the par
ties given in our honor.
The rose carnival and the parades
were simply great, I wish to thank es
pecially the people at Gearhart park
who showed us so much consideration.
Also Mr, Dennis who was the means
of making such a trip possible for us.
Miss Rotan and Mr. Brock cannot
be equaled'as chaperones. , -,
Taken ail together it was the mosl
enojyable time of my life and will al
ways beremembered at such. -

then presented to Mrs. Schllke as a
token k of their appreciation of' her
many efforts, her unrelenting energy
and skilled military ability, a hand
some solid silver set of knives and
forks. ,
; Following this, Wilma Rinehart was
the recipient of a beautiful ruby ring,
presented to her by the drill team as a j
compliment for the talented manner
in which she executed the beautiful
musical strains which lead La Grande's
most popuTar team to success.
To say that the presentation of the
drill work was grand, is expressing it
lightly for upon every hand compli
ment after compliment haB been, ex
tended them. None but those present
can in the least appreciate the beauti
ful military effect, the precision of
movement, the unity of sweet facial
expression and apparent hypnotic pow
er which teemed to emanate from that
most illustrious leader, and trainer,
