Young orchestra, a home production,
domestic science courses conducted by
Miss' Bertha Davis of O. A. C. and a
round table with Dr. J. D. Gillllan In
charge. Each of thes features will
be more fully explained at a later date.

sented to Mrs. H. C. Rinehart as ap
preciation for her services as worthy
grand matron of the Eastern Star in
Oregon, was a diamond-studded pen
dant presented by Hope Chapter No.
13, Eastern Star of La Grande. This
presentation wag made at Portland last
Wednesday when the La Grande drill
team won signal honors by its .fine
showing, surprising the best Informed
at the grand lodge. The pendant pre
sented to Mrs. RIn.f hart was studded
with U small diamonds, suggested by
the number of the chapter here, and
the words, "Hope Chapter," are en
graved on It. The present is an ele
gant one and was greatly appreciated

on La Grande people In behalf of the
invalid nurse girl, Miss Minnie Siever,
today reported to the Evening Obsef
ver that the Ellis order had donated
the entires receipts obtained from the
baseball game between Baker and La
Grande Elka. The net proceeds
amounted to about' $20 and the B. P.
O. E., order voted to give the entire
amount to the young lady, accompan
ied by the' best wishes of every Elk
on the roster of the lodge. s ,
The Indies are delighted with thts
contribution and in behalf of the in
valid young lady thanked the order's
representatives, assuring them f the
Elks' Idea of ''sending flowers to the
living" was in accord with what ef
forts there had been made to assist

July 24 has been eet as the date for
hearing the adjudication of the water
rights in this part of the valley. At
that time Water Superintendent Geo.
T. Cochran will hear the contest pro
ceedings. Instituted by 100 ranches
against the rights claimed by the
Haines Pipe Line company.
The list of contestants embraces
every farmer in the territory affected.
It is hoped at this time to settle the
matter of conflicting rights which has
been the cause of much litigation tor
years. ,
This s the first use made in this
county of the law which permits the
settlement of conflicting water rights
by he state board . of control. The
North Powder valley . was surveyed
last summer and this spring the water
users filed affidavits at a hearing held
at Baker. , Th farmers were dissatis
fied with the claims of the Halnea Pipe
Line "company au.4 Instituted contest

Creditors Will Be Satisfied Through
Assignments Made by Overton. ;
The Overton Lumber ' company,
through lis attorney, B. F. Wilson, has
this week made an assignment for the
benefit of its creditors, says the Union
Republican.
Since this company started in busi
ness at Union, It has been compelled
to meet a series of circumstances that
have, in a large measure, accounted
for its failure. First was the failure
of the machinery contractors to supply
machinery at the contract time, caus
ing the. inability of the lumber com
pany, to fulfill contracts. Next came
the continued slump In th?- demand
and price of lumber, which "has con
tinued until the present time,
Mr. Overton, the principal stockhold
er in the company, has all his available
capital in the enterprise and thinks
that with the ordinary demand for
lumber, he would have been able to
1 uil through all right. He thinks,
however, with good management the
company may be able to pay out.
The estimated assets of the com
pany according to Mr. Overton figures,
are $36,000, with liabilities at 18.
