. Horse shows, decoration days, circus
days and what not this week have left

dreds from La Grande, so there is no
hope for recuperation in the coming

the summer, the Tuesday Musical tak
ing its summer vacations and various
other clubs and aocletles resting on
their oars, society news is a scarcity
this week. i
One of the few church weddings of
the 1 1 year was solemnized in a quiet
way last Wednesday morning when
Miss Rena Burke, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Burke of this city was un
ited in marriage to Frank De Pender,
a boiler maker in the O.-W. shop
here. The young couple left on an ex
tended wedding tour on the day of
their marriage, having New. York as
their destination. They will live in:

groom's parents in Michigan. j
The ceremony was' performed in thej
morning at 7:30 o'clock with a nupfiial
mass service. ; The attendants wefe
Prank and Edna Burke, brother and
Bister of the bride. Miss Burke wore
a princess gown of brocade satin, en

deference to the igroom, a Frenchman,

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and;
Mrs. Ed. Burke of this city and has
acquired considerable prominence by
her ability as an artist, and tfaa groom

Miss Lottie Wall, for the past two
years , a popular teacher in the La
Grande schools was the guest of honor
at a' very pleasant party given last
Saturday evening by Miss Gertrude

The Park Dale ladies were, enter
tained at' the. home of Mrs. Henry
Young Wednesday afternoon.' Among
other amusements a call was made

j Mrs. Tatman of Fruitdale was the

i made the trip over in safety, while 25
ladles stood on the bank and cfo-ered.
. The boat dipped about ten gallons of
water. Afterwards a boat load of a-

der the four cem'-nt bridges from the
lower end of the park to the upper,
being the first boat to make this trip.

The speed ring program consisted
of quarter mile ,dash. half mile dash,
relay race," half-mile hurdle, barrel
race and chariot race, each' of which
was hotly, contested and aroused JJz

An accident happened In the relay
race- which nearly cost Leonard Slmms
his life. He was holding relay horses
and when" the first half mlla was fin
ished he was standing on the track In

force of a running horse Just before It
went under the wire. He waB knock
ed to the ground and badly bruised re
maining unconscious for several min
utes. Pat Foley was summoned with
his automobile and conveyed the In

This morning the condition of Mr.
Slmms was reported much Improved.
When the final race had been run
and the crowd again gathered In tho
uptown district Joe Keeney's special
train wa8 boarded by the large crowd
from La Grande and Hot Lake an,d the
