Civil war veterans of St. Louis and vicinity to day Joined in a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the fail of Camp Jack son. The celebration included the decoration of the statutes of Grant, Sigel,, Blair and other anion leaders and a program of exercises at .which addresses were delivered by Congress man Bartholilt, Major Leo Passieur, former commander-in-chief of the G. A. R.. and other men of prominence. It was on the morning of May 10, 1861, that a force of union soldiers la command of Nathaniel Lyon march ed upon Camp Jackson, which had been made the headquarters for the gathering of troops and supplies for the confederates, and took the strong hold by surprise. ' The capture of Camp Jackson has been spoken of as the .first decisive blqw dealt for the national government anywhere in the country. Historians are generally agreed that Gen. Lyon's bold stroke kept Missouri In the union and balked the plans of the secessionists to cut the line of communication between the east and middle west and the Pacific slope. . . "Spendthrift' Tonight In "The Spendthrift," the sensation al and domestic drama which Freder ic Thompson will present at the St .w ard tonight. Its author, Porter Emer son Browne, has written an intensely dramatic story around a plot that has a strong moral that strongly impress es every theatre goer- U concerns the wasteful spending- of money by an extravagant wife .who ultimately brings financial ruin on herself and on her husband.- The play comes here with a record of a season's run in New York, where it la still playing to crowded houses. It has b:en endorsed by the theatre-going public, the press, the clergy and all classes who appre ciate and maintain a timely drama ad mirably constructed, trenchantly writ ten, well acted and beautifully staged. All Girls In This Company.' It is the boast of the "Juvenile Bos tonlans" that theirs Is the only theat rical or operatic organization of the kind In the world, 1. e., every member! of the company is a girl. Of course,! there are men, but they occupy posi tions In the business department or are part of the stage crew. , The peo ple that the audience see, however, are all girls. Such an arrangement Is Impossible except In a Juvenile com pany, for. while a young girl can sue-) cessfully Imitate a boy of the same age, it is rare that a grown-up yount woman can do anything more' than masquerade as a young man.' In their years of experience with Juvenile organizations, Mrs. E, ,Lang and Birt Lang have discovered that the girls do the best work, are tiie less trouble, quicker study, more adap table and less liable to get Into mis chief. That is why all the male parts In the opt ras of the "Juvenile Boston- ians are played bv girls, none of them over 18 years old.
