Ball Tonlpht Will Likely Proove Boon to High School Team. . What money there remains from re ceipts of the annual O. A. C. ball to night will he turned over to the high school track team.. This was done last year and the sum proved a big as set In the team's expense accounts, As the attendance is always large there is joy among the track team members at the prospects of having some dollars added to their purse to cover their various big trips this year. The ball tonight . will ' draw manv out of town guests. A big string of automobiles is coming from Union and the afternoon train brought sev eral guests from the north end of thf county and from Wallowa county PASSION PLAY TOMORROW. Oberammer?aa Production Is Corainir t Here for Two Days at Arcade Oberammergau and Its "Passion Play," which will be shown at the Arcade tomorrow, is perennially fas- HnnHno- the nttonflnn of tha world. Every ten years when the redlglous drama is re-enacted by the Bavarian peasants increasing multitudes flock to see it. Some of them go because they are anxious to see a performance v.'hich is praised by the whole world. Others fall naturally in the current of fashion. Others obtain deep religi ous satisfaction from the spectacle of the persecution and sufferingoC the great Savior. The Passion Play Is then a sacred ceremony and they at tend it with the same feeling of de votion as the villagers who perform Its various parts. The Passion Play as it exists la our times has been pruned of all its medleaval license and Us text has been cast into literar form, The costumes are still design ed And mad by the peasants. All parts are taken y natives of Oberam-' mergau and often the same part Is played by the same man decade after decade until he acquires world-wid fame. This was the case with Josef Mayr, who played the character ot Jesus in 1870, 1880, and 1890. This cel ebrated Oberammergau died In 1903 at a good old age revered by multi tudes who had witnessed his artistic and reventlal portrayal ot the mst difficult part in all flrama. Many oth er Oberammergau actors have justly earned wide reputations, but for a wonder they seem to retain their vil lage humility and the love of money has not apparently Inspired the deep sincerity of their art. Live is not h festival for them and nobody could blame them much if they should som. time make up their minds to improve the opportunity to become suddenly rich which every ten year period af fords them. In Us modern form the Passion Play began as an act of devo tion and such It has continued for centuries. Today it is one of the won ders of the world for beauty and relig ious devotion.
