winners at that eventful show were
entered by the owners, McKcnnon &
Chandler ; In the killing contest and
the two-year-olds registered second
best of the entire exhibit- The scor b
were close to the winners, owned by
Judge. Bennett of Th. Dalles.
The La Grande ca tl. were handi
capped because-of the young age,
whereas the Bennet exhibit was com
posed of four-year-olds, a better age
for scoring- In killing contests.
The laurels coming thus late are
hlrhly appreciated by the growers

Washington, April 19. Consul Dye
at Agua Prieta today telegraphed the
war department that three Americans

Booster Ashley of Baker Here Today
To spread the gospel of Oregon ism
and more specifically Eastern Oregon
will be the object of A. S. Ashley, for
mer publicity manager of the Baker
commercial club, who is In La Grande
today learning something about how
much La Grande will share in the ex
ploitations he will make from an au
tomobile in the mlddlewestern and
eastern states. Mr. Ashley leaves May
1st and takes with him colored slides
of not only Baker county but of Union
county and its metropolis
The reason for making the trip by
automobile is to make the inland towns
and villages which, by reason of the
fact. He remotely from the railroad
lines and are seldom if ever visited by
such plans. He will call on as many
of the rural towns as possible and will
devote his entire time to lecturing and
showing slides of Eastern Oregon in
the middle west. Mr. Ashley alms to
show slides from all the towns" in Eas
tern Oregon, and especially from Un
ion county. .

Portland, Then Finished.
Official visitation of all Eastern Star
chapters in Eastern Oregon will have
been completed this evening when
Mrs. H. C. Rlnehart, grand worthy
matron of the Eastern Star in Oregon,
makes her call on 'the chapter there.
The Union chapter Is the last in this
section of the state to be visited by
the' grand .worthy matron and next
week will find Mrs. Rlnehart officially
visiting the chapters about Portland
as far down the Willamette valley as
Salem. That done, she will have com
pleted the entire round of lhapters.
It requires only one fifth to one
third as much acetylene gas as hydro
gen to do a given piece of welding.
