TOM J0HXS05, A LEADER. In the death of Tom Johnson the nation lost a leader. He Inaugurated reforms In municipal affairs at Cleve land that set the whole nation think ing. , While some of them did nqt prove practical perhaps, yet he was not near ly the failure that corporations as a whole would make tne public believe. Cleveland is a better city for having iad Tom JohnBon. , The public has ex perienced an education period regard ing public utilities that might have been delayed for years, had not this strong character came to the front and It is therefore sincerely to.be re gretted that he was called to his long home ere he had further entered into the struggle which is constantly on between', the public service corpora tions of a municipality and the general public. " , When such good ladies as Grandma Braden of Ladd Canyon passes away there is a feeling that, the day of the pioneer Is numbered. She lived to the splendid age of 91 years, which Is a testimonial for Eastern Oregon's good climate and .health giving qualities. But her life was one that helped make empires. In the solemn moment of thought toward this grand old lady turn to the, beautlful poem of Joaquin Miller, "The Greatest Battle That Ev er Was Fought.". That poem touches the heart in the right place when a strong feminine character is called. T'H't'L J, .J. :" mMemmmmn ii i. i ii 1 1 ii . i i 1,1 itmmmmmm THEATRE PROGRAM. Prlscllla's Umbrella.. THE ELLIS COXTROTERSY La Grande, April llATo the Editor of the Observer: Your last night's issue contains a letter from Mr, Ford A. Ellis in which he attempts to reply to my letter in your paper, published some days ago. He Is right in assum ing that he is the person at whom my criticisms were aimed, and that the contents of his letter indicate pretty strongly that, what I said took effect. It is not a crime to be young or Ignor ant " But it Is an act of impropriety for a boy JuBt out of school, without any special training, to take charge of a Christian congregation as a preach er of righteousness, it is wrong for anyone who has never studied theology to attempt to teach theology to oth ers. The science that teaches about God and divine things Is theology. That is what all Christian preachers attempt to teach the. people. It is the greatest of all subjects and requires careful preparation by a minister be fore he is Justified in attempting to teach and lead others. Ellis admits that he never studied theology. Hence, be admits his unfitness to occupy the position , of minister of religion. I have heard members of the denomina tion to which he was supposed to be long assert his unfitness for the minis try. When any minister finds that he does hot believe the things that his church expects htm to preach, it is his duty at once to resign and cease at tempting to preach in that body. Com mon honesty requires this and no one has a right to criticise one for doing so, if he makes his exit decently and in order. .. But here is where Mr. Ellis utter ly failed. Instead of going about his way. like an honest, prudent man would have done, he attempts to bring diBgrace and contumely on all minis ters. He first admits that he has not been honest and truthful and then at tempts to excuse himself by asserting that all preachers are dishonest and preach rwhat they do not believe. He ha,d a right to confess his own dishon esty and hypocrisy because he was in a position to know that he was dis honest and a hjocrlte, but common decency and propriety should have re strained him from attempting to im peach the-Integrity and faith of others. Judas Iscarlot was a thief and fell and betrayed his master and committed suicide, and went to his own place, but he did not condemn St. Peter and the other apostles. He showed some sense of propriety, but Mr. Ellis shows none. A'self confessed hypocrite, he denounces all preachers as dishonest if F V''t . The old maxim, "falsus in uno, falsus In omnibus," applies to him. When he publicly denounced all preachers as dishonest and untruthful he committ ed a crave offense against all who pro fess and call themselves christians, and, as one of this vast army, I resent It Every fair-minded man knows and will admit that many of the best and greatest men In the world have been and are ministers of the Chris tian religion. False men like Judas and Ellis get Into the ministry some times, but this does not prove that others are bad. Preaching the gospel Is the greatest and best calling on the earth, and It cannot be seriously Injured by the slander of such men as Mr. Ellis. He has fallen by the way side, but the great army marches on. Some day he may see the folly of his performance and repent, 'and bring forth fruit meet for repentance. W. M. RAMSEY. GOOD NEWS.
