Mercer of Eugene has penned a prose-poem on the Ore gon apple and has forwarded a copy to hia old friend, Senator Turner Oli ver, with compliments. Colonel Mer cer, by the way la a lecturer of con siderable ability and especially Is he ibl i to handle subjects relating to Abraham Lincoln his warm and per sonal friend. When Col. Mercer had completed his poem on the Oregon apple,' cap Honed ""When God made the Oregon apple," hj asked for crltkism fron! Mr. Oliver. The local senator, how ever, has been unable to find fault and bv snwlal nr4tn!' qjj; server ! publishes It -an , apostrophe that la worth reading: "So God created man in hls own mage..; in the image of God created he him, male and female created 'he hem." : .. : . ' "And God said, B:-hold, I have giv. n you every herb bearing seed, which Is upon the face of the earth, .and every tree, In the which is the fruit of a tree yieldlg seed; to you it shall be for meat." V ; ' ' 'And God saw every thing that he iad (thus far) made, 'and, behold, it was very good." ' ' And then He bethought himself of the Oregon apple, and straightway He dispatched his whits-wlnged an gcllc messengers throughout all the 3tar-strewn realms of space with ln- iif ruct!ong to gather all there was that s pleasing to the taste of Bmell. Wh:n the angelic reapers returned from their harvesting and threw down it His feet their burden of delicious fragrancles, He, began In their won dering presence the . moulding and fashioning of the Oregon apple. With Cupid's arrow He deftly Imbedded th bonnle seeds which were destined lat er to disclose the lqve-secrets of man ly swains and lovsly maidens. x He then took of the nectar which Jupitar sips; He took of the dainty drop cf lim pid wine. from th?, moon light -co! ored cup of the wind-Illy; He took of'the pearly honey-dew from th; rubied heart of the musk foBe; He look of the glittering , dew-drops which fall from the rosy fingers of. the goddess of morning; He took of th: puro sweet Bnow which gleams from the petals of the lily of the valley; He took of the sanctified sweetness of th1. kiss of love in its first deet hour of truth; He took of the sweet beguiling melody of a mother's lullaby, and H. took of the calm loveliness of the clos ing flowers when day Is dying and the evening star so holy shines. And God Bald, L;t us now array this appetizing mixture In gorgeous robes of russet and scarlet and wel low, and bright with the shen of the dew. So God took of the resplendent beauty of the world't opening glow; He took of the glittering garlands which the angels weave in Silver Star- land; He took of the trlpple rainbow on the mountain tops when the storm dispelling sun is enthroned in golden evening; He took of the radiant joy tints upon the apple-blossom cheeks of coy maidens when love within a dimple lies. Over these wondrous tints and colorings He threw a pro tecting mantle of dewy purple which. In autumn-time, rises like a cloud of sweet imnee from earth's full urn. And then from out his t-:nt of clouds the conquering autumnal sun came proudly forth, and like some grand enchanter, shed the splendor of his smile on the ripened gift, and all heaven and earth rejoiced, for lo. God had made the Oregon apple! , - Col. W. Q. D.
