"Sittie Agjln Being Brought Into En Tlalile Notoriety by Attack.rt The faculty of Oregon university at Eugene is apprehensive as to the re suits which might come to the Instltu tion if the propoa:d referendum vot should be had on the appropriations for maintenance of the unlversltv President Campbell, writing w Man ager Chapman, of the Commercial club, deplores the movrment. relates a Portland paper. He fears that such effort would react upon th: state, and thinks that such an Influence, iuatnow when colonists are flocking: in here would b; of the greatest Injury. Some points he makes are as follows: "We feel sure that not onlv win thn educational Interests of Oregon b rlously Injured If theue appropriation are held up for two y;ars. but isn that the state will be brought into un enviable notoriety throughout th union, and that we shall lose man'- good people who are at present look ing toward Oregon as a future home and much capital which might s;ek investment here. A condition of un rest In the next two years would cer tainly not prove attractive to possible Immigrants, and they might easily be diverted to either Washington or Call. fornia. - "If th Commercial clubs of Cot tage Grove and McMlnnvllle could be shown the damgers which these move ments are bringing upon the state they might be persuaded to use thalr Influence with their fellow-townsmen against the movements wVf'i Mv been inaugurated. I am inclined to think that already there is some wav ering at McMlnnvllle. The situation at Cottage Grove seems rather mnrp threatening, as there apparently is n determined feeling there to Invoke the referendum against the university. "It Is Ho be honed that the lornl committees at these places may ulti mately be persuaded to eive tin thpi- efforts toward referendlng the appro priations."
