The past two years ' have been strenuous, ones for Mr. Cox on ac count of the rapid accumulation -of work In that office. With thousands of dollars In sidewalk Improvements under the Bancroft law, great -Bums of money under the same law ss per taining to payments for the exten sive paving that has been carried on and will continue, the routine work which ' has increased treraenduously, Mr. Cox Is glad to shake his should ers of the position. No office in' the county has multiplied in hardships like the city recorder's office. Five i years ago the council met once t a month and was always one at 10 o'clock; Now it meeta every week and labors until neatly midnight, entail ing a massi ve amount of clerical work In the way of keeping minutes. Keep ing tab on the minutes and drawing warrants and 'all that goes with It, to day makes more work than customar ily was Involved by the entire routine of work In the office. Some of the things now required of the office Is to keqp tab on the annual payments for hundreds of thousands of dollars un der Improvement work, big bond Is sue Interests, handling the weighing scales where something like 200 monthly weights are made, copying ordinances which have to do with the pavement work, Including column af ter column of figures and a mistake In anyone of which would create un told financial difficulties, and a score of other detail matters. With vast sums of money from all sources being handled In the office, extreme care, precaution and ability ' are required, few realize what a vast difference of work Is 'entailed by that office now, compared with five years ago.
