to name a secretary of. state to suc
ceed Frank W. Benson should the
latter not qualify for office, and that
Turner Oliver Is one of two likely
candidates for the appointment If one

When asked as to what disposition
he will make of the office to which he
waa re-elected. Governor Benson stat

have no Intention of resigning my of
fice and will be fully capable to fill it
upon my return, from California
which I think will not be latig." j
The indications are that Acting Gov
ernor Jay Bowerman will have the
opportunity to appolct a Secretary of
State to fill that office for four years
beginning the first week In January.
Governor F. TV. Benson, who is the
regularly elected Secretary of State
for the ensuing four-year term, leaves
this week for California for the bene
fit of his shattered health. When he
came back during the campaign and it
waa announced that he was steadily
regaining bis health, it was feared
that his true condition was not made
public This has proven to be the case.
The governor has been j able to. act' in,
his official capacity only' for two day

pelled to leave the reins of governr
ment in the hands of the President of

If he resigns hlB office a Secretary

will fill the position until Governor
.West takes over the executive office.
But should Mr. Benson bold his office
until' after January, 1, when all new

positions,. Governor Bowerman will

If Benson's successor .is appointed
by Bowerman, the.' state boards ; will

until after the convening of the Leg

Bowerman for governor, the situa
tion of Mr. Benson la relation to the
office of Secretary of State was tak
en up by politicians and a means of
having Benson's successor appointed

ting up their wires for the place, al
though the two Republicans mention
ed prlcipally are making no effort to
obtain the position and would pro
bably decline If it was offered. These
are A. I Mills, president of the First
National Bank, and Malcom Moody,
ex-Congressman and political leader
of Wasco county. ",v

ern Oregon and the election of a site
for tbe branch asylum in Eastern Ore
gon would, naturally, also enter into
consideration for any appointment
