over all of the government forest re
serves in the Federated Malty states.
"The territory includes about 5,000,
Oio 'Acres, and the company has ob
tained therlght to tap all Jfilatong
trees' on this wicls area for a period
of ten years, with a renewal privilege
for seven years more. This company
holds' tlso large rights in South Bor
neo, in Sarawak, and in the Karimon
Islands. They turned out 32.J.000
poundfs of jelatong last year and re
alized for their recent sales $1.2o a
pound.
"On tha Knrimon Islands, situated a
short distance .south of Sinugapore,
the company is erecting a $300,000
ftctory in addition to the large one
now in operation in Sarawak. This
factory will handle all the jelatong
received from concessions outside of
Sarawak.' I( Is claimed that early in
1011, when the mills will be in full
operation, they can produce 6,000,000
pounds of.' jelatong gum, 10.000,000
pounds in 1912, and 12,000,000 in 1913.
These are estimates made by those

Tame bears are almost as dangerous
to have around the house as wild grlz
ilies, according to the annual report
of the Acting Superintendent of Yel
lowstone National Park, Major H. C.
Benson, of the Fifth Cavalry, made
public today. In part Benson says:
"Many complaints were" received
during the summer of damages in var
ious camps by bears. They frequently
become bo tame that they do not hesi
tate to destroy tents or go through
windows into houses to secure food,
and sometimes they refuse even to be
driven away.
"One man working In a camp near
Excelsior Geyser was quite severely
bitten and scratched by a bear that he
tried to drive away from the supply
tent during the night. He was con
fined to the hospital for 12 days as a
result of his Injuries, and his com
panion who ran to his assistance also
received some scratches. It was
thought that It would become neces
sary to kill some of these vicious
bears and many requests to do so
were received from parties who suffer
ed from their depredations, but th's
was not rested to.

Oregon on the 9th day of November,
1910, creating Improvement District
No. 28, and designating Lake avenue,
as such district, and in pursuance of
a resolution adopted by said Common
Ccuncil on the 2nd day of November,
1910, whereby said Council deter
mined and declared Its intention to
improve all that portion of Lake
avenue, in said improvement dis
trict as hereinafter described, by lay
ing thereon macadam pavement, the
council will, ten days after the ser
vice of this notice upon the owners
of the property affected and benefit
ted by such Improvement, order that
said above described Improvement be
made; that boundaries of Bald district
to be so improved are as follows: All
that portion of Lake avenue from the
west curb line of North Second atrt
to the west line of N. Cedar streei.

Ccuncil will levy a special assessment
on all the property affected and bene
fitted by such improvement for the
purpose of paying for such improve
ment. That the estimated cost of such
Improvement is the sum of $369800.
That the Council will on the 23r day
of November, 1910, meet at the Coun
cil chamber at the hour of 8 o'clock
p. m. to consider said estimated cost,
and the levy of said assessment, when
a hearing will be granted to any per
son feeling aggrieved by such assessment
