Eugene, Ore., Not 14 (Special) To offset a prevall lng opinion that athletics are not good students, and to maintain the high standard of scholarship at the Univer slty of Oregon, the faculty has adopt ed a scheme whereby every athlete who is low in his studies must forfeit all right to participate In all contests' or practice, until be can bring up bis grade to an average mark. So far this ytar the plan has been a success. Nine football men have been forced to turn in their suits, and In each case by dili gent pursilt of his studies, the man has been allowed to return to the game. The rule applies to other stud ent activities besides football. Three glee club men so far hare been asked their voices a temporary rest and two of them are again back on the club. The edict reaches all classes of ath letes and no matter bow valuable, a man Is to his team or club, he must get his lessons or quit. As a rule athletes are the best stud ent,, and the percentage of football men reported this year Is very small In comparison to the percentage of students who are not athletes. Be sides It Is a very effective measure against "ringers." Every professor has a complete list of those engaged in athletics or other siuaent enterprises, registered In bis department, and ..he' must report any, low grade received by these students, to the head office.
