LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER. MONDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1910. I 4 13 J, .1 peoples ronra. . o 0000000000 ndently there was a fabled mon- jr of the sky called the roc, says story-teller of the Arabian Nights some other standard classic. This ged creature was bo great and so acious that the Inhabitants of the d Infested by It ' fled , In terror lenever they saw its sable shadow. t over their land. o the land of liquor sellers the of Prohibition Is the bird of evil n overshadowing the broad cam- They run to -and fro and are heir wits end when It Is rumored the terrible monster Is. about to ap pear. I was In Baker City recently and ' discovered a re-forming, of the liquor forces: notice, I said re-form, not reform. This Is the line of je forming: they are shutting up the saloons tight (T) a very Saturday night, and no minor Is permitted to get any Intoxicant, and (I believe) no female Is allowed to loaf around in side the place where liquors are dis pensed. Now, who wrought this change? The liquor men themselves condescended to get "good" for they heard the evil bird of Prohibition was about to alight on their territory. They saw the ominous shadow and fled for terror to some sort of refuge , In formal obedience to the state lawB directory of the Fraternal Orders c JCa Cjrande. Oregon F. & A. LIZZIE ELLSWORTH. Clerk.' till the harpy was gone. . See what the shadow Inspired in their hearts! If the shadow Is so H powerful, what can the "real thing" be? Well, the real thing is coming to Baker City. There is always profit In Belling liq uor or it would never be Bold.' Under (so-called) prohibition there Is more liquor Bold that under license. If this la true, then there is more money made by the saloon men thus than otherwise. But. wonderful ,to relate, the liquor-dealers themselves are clamoring for . the exalted privilege of paying large 8"ums of money for li censes so that they may make less money by selling a less amount of goods. Funny, seems to me. The Telegram of Portland had this to say one day last week In sub stance: If the officers In the "dry" territories would attend to their bus iness and observe to keep their oath of office, there would be very little bootlegging done. . . Over In Idaho they are making the fellows feel the force of the strong arm of the law. In Pocatello where until recently here was a regular carnival of saloons, they have prohi bition. It prohibits. One druggist who was convicted and sentenced to six months la the county Jail, took an appeal, but in the meantime went to Jail. That was four .months ago. The higher court decided he had to serve the sentence. Now he begins the six months term. So says the Pocatello Tribune. A denizen of the underworld was convicted and la serving time In Jail. The sheriff, a democrat, and a man not particularly partial to pnJ- hibltlon, goes with his deputies and makeg quiet and unexpected calls on them who are suspected of doing il legal selling, and the result is that the lawbreakers are not vslted by detectives. The officers sworn to en force law are doing It as a conscien tious part of their duty. Who would believe , this 'fabulous story? k . : A convention of all the animals of the world was once called to consider how to lessen the evils of the Ophidian tribe. Now; the Ohpldlans were very respectable people in their way; but the assembled denizens of the earth and air did not like their ways. They were given to biting and destroying. They discussed several schemes, some of which were most chimerical, in volving the suggestions of various ones to' prohibit their multiplying, to pull their fangs, to banish them, or to kill them off. The goat and the hog were appointed a committee of two to resolve with power to act They then legislated that the little ones, vipers, adders, moccasins, cobras and the like, being the most deadly should be looked on with much and exceeding disfavor and discouraged. The ele gant, graceful, bewitching, charming, powerful and really uplifting mem bers of the tribe should on the pay ment of great sums of money into the public treasury be permitted to exist as "necessary evils. . They were however, imposed upon savagely for they were taxed enor mously for the mere privilege of liv ing. They were also required to dress respectably and to have good charac ter. They all promised to be good but they could not keep their word be cause they were snakes. After a long while the creatures who licensed them discovered that so long as the big fellows lived, there was sure to be a brood of the little fellows around, and they then resolv ed on extirpation. This is (he way prohibition became Jfotlce of Street Improvement To whom-It may concern: Notice is hereby given that in pursuance of a resolution adopted by the Common Council of the City of La Grande, Or, gon on the 21st day of September. 1910, 'creating Improvement District No. 26 and designating Cedar street as such district, and in pursuance of a resolution adopted by said Common Council on the 21st' day of Septem ber. 1910, whereby said Council deter mined and declared its intention to Improve all that portion -of Cedar Street, In said Improvement district, as hereinafter described, by laying thereon board sidewalk, the Coun cil, will ten days after the service of this notice upon the owners of the property ... affected and 1 benefitted by such improvement, order that said above described improvements be made; that the boundaries of said dis trict to be so improved are as fol lows.'
