All Physicians Agree With La Grande Doctors no to Mystifying Cannes. La Grande, July 21. To the editor In the passing of Arlo Myers, La Grande meets a severe loss. Young men of his character cannot well be sparred. His ability to excel! in all he undertook will keep his memory ripe in the athletic world; in debating and oratorical fields; as a leader showing unusual executive ability; in play and work alike will he be re membered fondly. Boys and girls, young men and women and the cit izens of La Grande of mature years all admired Arlo Myers for the skill and success of his nineteen years. But the real boy behind it all; his force of character, his modesty in victory; his fair spirit of "live and let live," his clean-cut life, his balance between right and wrong these are tne things that made all love and respect Arlo Myers and made him a power for good In the younger set This young man will warrant emulation in the school room, on the rostrum, on the athletic field and, most important of all. at home, for Arlo Myers was the right kind of a son or he would never have been the perfect gentleman and true sportsman he always demonstrated himself to be. Who among the young men will strive to fill Arlo Myer's place of influence for all things good. F. E. MOORE. EVADING THE LAW. The Pictures of Flying Birds In a Mo hammedan Mosque. According tu one of die teuets of the Mohammed;'. ii religion, it i a . ... U make a picture of uuy living thing The elaborate decorations of the pal aces and mosque of the east are al most exclusively made up of ingenious ly Interlaced geometric designs, ara besques or flowers, intermixed with sentences of the liorau. There is a belief among Mussulmans that at the day of judgment Allah will demand that the artist who has madi the image of a living thing shall endow that image with life and that, falling to do this, the artist will be sent to perdition for bis sin. A gentleman wbo visited a mosque in Algiers found that the tiles with v. !ikh the building is decorated, which re very old and very beautiful, are !id.rued with flights of birds. Oe ex pressed surprise at this and asked if the command against such representa tion were a modern edict. "Ob. no." answered the pious Alge rian to whom be addressed the ques tion. "These are not pictures of liv ing birds." "But they are painted as if flying across the tiles." the other said in some astonishment "Yes," the Mussulman replied, "but do you not see that about the neck of each there Is a fine black line? That Is to show that the artist painted only dead birds, and the command of the Koran is not violated." THE WET RAIN. Titer Are Several Varieties, and All Have Their Whims. Rain Is principally composed of water, but It snoutu out .-Ti-A with mining stock. Rain always comes on Sunday after noons and wash days. Wash day may be changed to any day In the week, systematically or indis criminately, but the rain will come. Sunday afternoon, however, cannot be changed to any other afternoon. Tbe rain will bold off until you are ready to go driving, and then the word will be passed along tbe mysterious i urrents of tbe air. and a double order of cirrus and cumulus will be hurried in from the west. Also in tbe mornipg. when yon leave CASTE IN THE ARMY. Civilians Find It Difficult to Under stand Military Discipline. One thing not commonly understood among civilians Is tbe completeness of tbe barrier which divides army offi cers from the soldiers, or, as they are more generally called, the "men." It Is always vastly amusing to those fa miliar with the service to observe the errors in this respect frequently made by tbe novelist and the playwright. Personal qualifications have nothing whatever to do with the matter. A soldier may be a gentleman who has enlisted with the purpose of obtaining a commission, yet there can bo be tween him and bis officers no social Intercourse of any sort, and severe penalties would be Inflicted upon the officer wbo would attempt to disregard the rule. It might seem that this enforcement of a caste sense would result in much bard feeling on the side of tbe men. Such, however, is not actually the case. It Is taken for granted and rec ognized as conducive to "good order and military discipline." It Is a mili tary regulation like any other and Im plies no disgrace. Directly a soldier's enlistment Is out or directly be rises from the ranks tbe prohibition Is re moved. -Delineator. homo and carry your umbrella and raincoat, tbe rain will go away and oik. But if you take heart of the fair sky and leave tbe umbrella and other trimmings then the rain will wait until you leave the office and then j get you. luviu;.::; H,"lr a few grip and rheumatism germs into ! yonr system. Rain is good for tbe crops, but why it takes you for a crop is bard to un derstand. Rain never brought fame to any one except Noah. Probably on tbe day the flood began be watcbed tbe last picnic party drive out of town in a bus. shout ing sarcastic things at him through the dust. There are several varieties of rain, but the one most popular with the j weather bureau is called "Probably." Fair Customer I want a birthday present for my husband. Dealer Tea,! mum.
