Miss Anna De Long of Hot Lake,
was a guest yesterday with Mrs. Ear
nest Walsinger. -
Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Massee were In
Elgin Sunday to attend the funeral of
a young nephew of Mrs. Massee, who
died Friday.

ture this morning for Harney county,
where they will locate permanently.
Circuit Judge J. W. Knowles and
Court Reporter Hanna went to Enter
prise today and .tomorrow will con
vene court at that plae. The court
will return- to La Grande jn time to
open the "adjourned term here July 25.
Mrs, J. 'J. Carr, who has been at Hot
Lake for . some time, returned to her
home in La Grande yesterday, feeling
very well. She underwent an opera
tion at the sanitarium and has re
gained her health once more.

The baseball situation In Union and
Wallowa counties is Bomewhat awry,
and the standing of the teams is hard
to ascertain. The table given above,
is computed on the basis that Elgin
won the disputed game with Enter
prise a fewweeks ago, and also on the
supposition that Elgin does not get
credit for yesterday's forfeit. Joseph
notified Elgin that she was disband
ed and could not play at Elgin yester
day according to schedule, and "for

Tournament On Foot .
A tournament between the winners
of the Umatilla county league, and the
leaders of tha Inter-county league and
the Eastern Oregon league at the time
the explosions occured, is now being
arranged and It is !Reiy that it will
take place next week. These condl
tlons would bring together Weston,
Elgin and Cove at Elgin, for about
seven games.
Enterprise and La Grande played a
loose game here yesterday, Enterprise
winning 16 to 6. Both teams contract
ed cometlc fever and went way up be
fore settling dowu to customary play
Ing. Browne was In the box for La
Grande, but the game was never In
terestlng. -
"SIGN OF THE CROSS" ENDS
SADLER ATTRACTIONS
Dramatizations of "The Sign of the
Cross" have been seen and heard by
the most of us, and nearly all of us
have heard the masterpiece recited,
but none, no doubt, have heard a more
stirring delineation of the characters
portrayed in that story than did some
four hundred last night when the clos
ing number of the Doctor Sadler com
pany was read at the Chautauqua
grounds. Miss Wllmer's recital was
in a class by Itself. The thrills, the
pathos and flow of masterly diction
that fill "The Sign of the Cross" from
cover to cover, were manipulated with
rare skill by Miss Wilmer. The story
of persecution of the Christians at the
hands of Nero and his lieutenants, the
passionate love story interwoven with
the blood curdling scenes were all
told In Miss Wlllmer's own Interpre
tation of the characters. The recital
was a fitting close of the Sadler com
pany's stay in La Grande.
It is doubtful if any other team or
Chautauqua attraction could have won
such warm places In the heart of La
Grande, as did the Sadler company.
Tbey hate simply captured La Grand
with a whirl and it was with deep re
gret that the Cbautauqua-golng pub
lic, parted with the company last
evening.
Yesterday ' morning Doctor Sadler
delivered a rare bit of a sermon on
"Health and Righteousness," and dur
ing the afternoon he addressed an In
teresting crowd of men on topics not
discussable with a mixed audience,
during this age of prudery. At the
same hour similar subjects were
handled by Doctor Lena K. Sadler to
a crowd of ladies, and the only re
gret expressed . was that the entire
population of La Grande did not hear
them. The Chautauqua management
Is deserving of the highest praise for
bringing such an attrnctfon to La
Edward Brush, the Magician, .Mho
reached La Grande yesterday with a
carload of live animals and parapher-
