D. H. Steward, wife and grandson,
are having grief in interior Nevada.
When a letter received by Mr. and
Mrs. C. M. DeVere of this city wa
writen, - the opera house ; manager
was serenely eating dust In the sage
brush districts, waiting beside a black
smith shop for repairs. What is
worse, Mr. Steward's stogies are run
ning low. The party will be forced
to wait by the wayside smifhy until
repairs for the machine can be sent
from La Grande, which will require
a couple of days at the very best. "I
don't see how anyone can live in this
section where sage brush and dust
are so thick that nothing else can be
found," writes Mrs. Steward. This Is
the first accident which has befallen
the party on their way into interior

Seargent With Third Infantry Parti
cipates In Moro's Capture.
Seargent Carl Glllllan, son of Dr.
and Mrs. J. D. Glllllan of this city,
is participating In real "duty" with the
Third Infantry, regulars, at, a small
Island near Borneo, according to ad
vices received through newspaper
cablegrams. The Third Infantry-was
yesterday sent out to quell and cap
ture murderous Moros who have kil
led Dutch traders,' b order of the
commander at Camp Jolo where, the
Third Infantry Is stationed. Mr. Gll
lllan is an officer of that regiment
and Is of course participating in the
attack on the blood thirsty Moros.
Naturally enough local people who
know Mr. Glllilan will be anxious to
hear more from the crusade against
the man killers. -

Knights Hare Big Time In Metropolis
During Convention Week. .
J. F. Baker, delegate to the grand
lodge,' Knights of Pythias, grand do
main, of Oregon, returned last even
ing from Portland where he attended
the , several sessions of the grand
lodge. The attendance was large :
about 160 delegates being present.
They met in Ivanhoe Lodge No. 1 on
Monday- night and an informal meet
ing of all ; the Knights in the city
was held to start the convention. On
Tuesday night the degree of the or
der, Knights of Khroassan.
The grand officers were elected on
Tuesday and installed on Wednes
day. After the business meeting and
entertaining love feasts were held,
at which speeches were made, many
of the prominent members of the or
der participating. : The next session
will be held in .jtoria, being the cen
tennial anniversary of the founding
of that city by the Hudson Bay Com
pany and named in honor of John
Jacob Astor. V.
