The old man said, "No, Jim, I can't do IL ! have known you ever' since you was a baby, and I like you, but in 1S5 your father played a trick on me and stole some watermelons. -No, Jim, 1 Just can't vote for you." DEMAND STEOXG FOR 'GOOD MORSES. To all wbo think the day of the 'good horse is passing let us call at tention to a local condition that ex ists right here In Union county. This Is a noted horse country. Buyers come from all sections because they they get good horses from this val ley. They find the animals far su perior to the Willamete valley horses because of the difference In the feed, and possibly the altitude has some thing to do with the quality." : , ' A few days ago Dr. Hall sold a horse for $250 and Hay Norvall on the same day sold one for $350. If La Grande bad 500 horses of the same kind they would be bought at the same prices by horse buyers. One of the most damaging knocks ' r I nvvaiA. afA KaIiht m t rn tw rr 4te is the knock that says, "He s a good ......... , . . , .nv. Read what the Recorder has to say and be careful to notice the mention of Jealouc of I Notice is hereby towns, etc. the very thing that every j District School Board of Schoo public spirited man In this part of trict No. 1, of Union Courtr, 0 Oregon . has labeled "mosBbacklsm" and relegated to toe garbage can. The Recorder says to Its readers: "The Evening Observer, of La Grande, In its issue of Tuesday con- given that the School Dis- regon, will receive m to four o'clock p. m. of June 21, 7910. sealed bids for fur nishing said School District with 200 cords of four foot split yellow pine and red Cr wood, said wood to be tained an article suggesting that Un- Ion and Wallowa counties get togeth- J er on an advertising scheme and ad- verttse the resources of the two Joint ly, offering as an argument therefor the statement that the individual communities could not afford to car ry on the proper advertising alone and unaided. The Intent of the writ er Is right and proper, but the Re- corder dose not . believe the plan can be carried o t successfully and with J satisfaction to all, from the fact that i too much Jealousy exists between the j people of various towns in me io counties. We do not mean personal , Jealously exactly, but rivalry, which would result in Jealousy in a plan carried out as suggested by the Ob server. No doubt every community would reap some benefit therefrom, but some would gain more than oth ers. La Grande, situated as she is, would gain more benefit than all the balance of Union county and the whole of Wallowa county unless her citizens saw fit to give the other, sec tions their Just dues. It is a fact that there are a few knockers In La Grande who, when, .they . cannot land a prospective homeseeker, will prevent them from visiting otter sections by telling them of their dis advantages. Elgin has had some ex perience in this line with La Grande and has had It rubbed in so long that local people will never consent to the proposed arrangement. Elgin Is, and has always been ready to enter any Joint exhibit of products, or like advertising scheme, where ail had an equal show at the land seeker, 'and is ready, to do the same today, hut the new schame will "not' meet, with approval. "The Recorder does not want to be understood as trying to disorganize or diarupt: that Is not our purpose, b.t the writer has been here too long to believe the Inter county advertising scheme', win work successfully." - Now, granting, that there has been Jealousy ; granting that it has been well founded, how long, in the name cut while green and not later than July 15, 1910, free from large knots and acceptable to said School Board. HIT SLAB II Tiili EYERTTHIXG LN READINESS FOR HISTORY MAKERS. ' Ererj Citizen of La Grande a Com , . mlttee of One on Reception "Swing the glad hand" Is the slo gan which local committees have as sumed today, on the eve of the Union county Pioneer's Association meet ing In the Alrdome theatre building of this city tomorrow morning. The committees have done all In the!.' power and this afternoon, through the Observer columns, appoint every man and woman In La Grande a com mittee of one to make It a point to see that every visitor tomorrow" ,7a given a royal welcome. Everything that can make things pleasant for the history makers has been done, but the "glad hand" business is up' to the individuals, and to this end, the com mittee asks the assistance of every individual in La Grande. An Inter esting program will be carried out meeting is to allow the pioneers am ple time to swap stories anr retell incidents In their lives of which they have Just reason to be proud.
