' Daddy's Bedtime St orv How the Little Boy Saved His Country MmHERE Is a little country, across the sea called Holland," said daddy II . when Jack and Evelyn asked for their evening story, "and 1 think II I shall tell you this evening bow a little boy saved the country from' a great flood. - "You see, the land In Holland is very low, so low that some of It is lower than the sea. There are no mountains and no high hills. The land in some places is so low that the people have had to build great walls to keep the water out. If they had not done so the water would have kept coming In farther and farther so that there would soon have been no land left. - The walls that are built to keep out the sea are called dikes. . , "The people must see that these dikes- are kept In good order, tha they do not leak. , If they were allowed to leak the water would soon rush In, break down the dikes and flpod the land. The people who live in Holland are called the Dutch. All the Dutch, even the children, know that the dikes must be kept In condition to hold back the water, else their country would be In great danger. The children are taught that in school. 1 ; ' 'One day a little Dutch boy was 'sent on an errand by his mothen late In the afternoon. He did the errand and was going home Just as it began to grow dark, nis way home led him past the dike, and as he walked he thought of what he had been told about the dike. He went quickly to the big wall and there, sure enough, he saw a tiny hole through which the water was leaking. He was badly frightened and did not know what to do. There was no house near by for which he could go for help, and he was afraid to go far away for fear the water would come through quickly and break down the dike, bringing a flood on the land.
