Coxey who, In 1904, organized a considera , tie number of the discontented, who then were more common than work Oi' wages, to march upon Washington and demand a redress of grievances. The democrats were In full authority at Washington. Mr. Cleveland was president und there was a large demo crat majority Jn both senate and the house. The party had been swept Into power on a wave of tariff reform. It had for years been thundering in Its platform ' that, If entrusted with control of all law-making branches it would make such a mighty cut In tariff taxes -that the Buffering consu mer would find relief from his bur dens. In a way this pledge was kept l no consumer wan easeu ui musi ui the bured of consuming. Idle men wan dered over the country seeking some thing to consume. The atmosphere was cleared and purified by being cleansed of the factory smoke which had once polluted It. and appetites grew keener, partly because pf that clearance and partly because every thing was bo cheap that it seemed la easy reach. When would-be consu mers reached , for things they found that the low-hanging fruit hung too high to be reached by the. men tied down. j. Blair and John Roach as receivers under 125,000 bonds, on a petition of the Westinghouse Elec tric company. The company owes Westinghouse $09,000 which they are unable to pay, owing to outstanding Judgments aggregating $1,300,000.
