Executives of life insurance companies repre senting more than sixteen, million policy holders, out of a total of twenty millions In the United States and Canada, were in attendance to day at the opening session of the third annual public meeting of the Association of Life Insurance Presi dents. . 1 President Taft and Gov. Hughes of New York delivered brief addresses. Aside from these speeches, the fea ture of the day was a discussion of life insurance experts of ways and means by which the companies may legally engage In the movement to lensthen the span of huTian life. Re Insurance or amalgamation of weak companies was considered, as was the problem of securing uniformity in the laws regulating life Insur ance companies. ; Out of Jail, re-arrested, released Fred Taylor, the negro who yes terday was -given his liberty after three '.months 6pent in the county Jail, was arrested late yesterday af ternoon and pleaded guilty to carry ing a revolver at the. time -of hiR arrest for burglary three months ago, and was fined $25. The money was paid and the revolver was returned to the negro. The Baker City Herald says: "At 7:30 last evening Judge H. E. Court ney passed peacefully, away at his home, conrer of Fourth and -Auburn. He has been ailing for many months past with heart trouble and had been unable to be about much since last June. During the last three weeks he was confined to his bed and death was expected at any time. His end was peaceful and he was cheered by the presence of his wife and son, Henry Courtney. He Is aslo surviv ed by a brother, Dr. H. A. Courtney, who resides In Portland. Judge Courtney was one of the old est and one of the most highly re cpected members of the Baker county bar". He was a Jurist of ability, a deep thinker, logical leasoner, and possessed of Impartial judgment. For 20 -years he has practiced his profes sion In Baker City and during that time had. made many warm personal friends."
