Word has been received here today
that Joseph Kelly, a wealthy liquor
dealer, who piled his stock of liquors
in the street and burned them, after
he had been converted In a recent
revival meeting that was being held
by a Los Angellst evangelist, Is dead
at the sanitarium at Belmont Cal.
Heart disease Is given as the cause
of his sudden death. His friends de
clare that he has developed slmptom
of great mental strain since he was
converted and made the spectatcular
destruction of his saloon stock ami
fixtures, several weeks ago. Kelly Is
said to have destroyed liquor worth
fully $2,500 and thousands of cigars
in the presence of fully three thous
and spectators in the most prominent
business section of Carson City. '

Butte, Mon. Jan. 12. In a quarrel
over homesteading a few acres of
ground In a field of Cyrus Spangler,
a well known stockman, Lawrence Bo
land, a ranch hand, was shot to death
by Spangler today. Boland was em
ployed by Spangler on his ranch near
Butte and had gone to the field to help
Spangler set stakes. A dispute arose
during which Spangler declares bis
emplye dr?w a revolver. The stock
man said that he fired the first shot
at Boland in self defense. Boland was
Instantly killed.

which the lad arraigned the author
ities for their methods in dealing with
youthful prisoners. Young McCormlck
who has served two terms in the state
reformatory was taken to the 'state
prison today to begin a life sentence
for the killing of Henry, a miner of
YpsilantI and a university student.
Following are a few of his statements:
."Why don't some of these christians

form school determined to turn over
a new leaf." "Most of us are born on

for study on the part of sociologists.
The third unit of the Umatilla pro
ject in northern Oregon has been com
pleted and an additional area of 4,
104 acres will be supplied with water
next season.. In opening these lands
to settlement, the S-cietary of the In
terior has Issued the following no
tice: "Water will he furnished from the
Umatilla project, Oregon, under the
provisions of the Reclamation act, in
the irrigation season of 1910, for the
Irrigable areas shown on farm unit
plats of Townships 4 and 5 north,

terior December 17, 1909, and on file

first observed drifting toward the Pa

Park. It Is about three-quarters of a
mile above, the water. The aeronauts
were seen through field glasses fran
tically throwing out sand bags. Had
they allowed the bag to settle It would
have fallen into a cone of eastward
air current and would have been car

The limit of area per entry, repres
enting the acerage, which in the opin

The limit of area for which water
right application may be made for
lands In private ownership shall be
160 acres of irragable lands for each
land owner.
The charge which shall be made
per acre of irrigable land in the
said entries and for lands heretofore
entered or In private ownership which
as follows:
(a) The building of the irrigation
system, $00. per acre of Irrigable land
payable In not more than ten annual
Installments, each payment not less
than $6.00 or some multiple thereol
per acre, except that In case of lands
hereafter entered the first 'Installment
of building charge shall be $18. per
acre and subsequent Installments of
$6.00, per acre.
(b) For operation and maintenance
for the Irrigation season 1910, and an
nually thereafter until further notice
$1.30 per acre of irrigable , lands,
whether water is used thereon or not
As soon as the data are available, the
operation and maintenance choice will
be fixed in proportion to the amount to
water used, with the minimium charge
per acre of irrigable lands whether
water is used thereon or not

the arrival today of Detectives Scha
lon and Emanuel of the Philadelphia
Central office, Frederick Cohen, the
writer who eloped from Philadelphia
with Roberta De Janon the 17 year-old
heiress to a fortune of $10,000,00,0, has
waived extradition and he will be
taken back to Philadelphia late today
or tomorrow.
Cohen and Mlsa De Janon left Phil
adelphia on December 19. After three
weeks of wandering they reached Chi
cago, where they were located by the
police.
Since their capture, little Roberta
declares that the fault of the entire
escapade is hers. At every turn she
tried to shield the old man who left
his wife to accompany her, Cohen ac
cepts the girl's sacrifice without a
qualm. He reitterated again today to
the police that he only ran away with
Roberta after she had threatened to
kill herself if he did not take her
away from- home' He declared that
he had been hypnotized into doing fis-
L thing for which he had no taste fot
what had been done but had been
compelled to go with the girl throuuh
her influence over hlra.
"Why," he declared, "Roberta's fa
ther will thank me for keeping her
from committing suicide. Roberta is
ready to return home iinmed'uMy.
She declared today that the oaly thiag
that she cares for now Is to go to her
father and grandfather. She announc
ed, however that she was ready to
dp anything she could to shield Cohen
and stated that if It were possible
that she would persuade her father
to give him money for caring for her
during their trip.
Acquitted bnt Is Insane.
Willws, Cal." Jan. 12. Alma Belt,
who was acquitted on the charge of
nuder when she killed her false
lover Joe Armes at Auburn, Califor
nia, was reported yesterday to be go
ing Insane, appears to be perfectly
well today. One of her brothers ar
rived here, she greeted him cordially
asking about their mother and other
members of the family. When she
was told that her mother was not at
all well, she said that Bhe wished to
go home, The girl became angry, lat
er and on Monday was very despond
ent following a quarrel with Mrs.
Denny whom she is visiting. She seiz
ed a pistol and theratened to kill her
self and It was taken from her. Mrs.
Denny ordered a young man who is
a stranger in this neighborhood to
go home, last Sunday when he call
ed on the girl and emained until after
midnight This was the cause of the
trouble. '

Ienna, Ills., Jan. 12. Four compan
ies of state militia arrived today and
assumed charge of the situation which
developed from the attempt to lynch
three negroes who are charged with
murdering Allen Clark a rural route
mall carrier. ;
