"The Gtrl at the Helm," paid her
first visit to Portland yewterday and
received great crowds of people in the
afternoon and evening at the Baker
theatre. Her new acqualntences were
D delighted with her and pronounced
her one of the brightest, breeziest nnd
best atractlons at the Baker this year
by long odds.
There is enough of a' plot to roako
It Interesting, not burdensome, and
if the principles were all nil the cho
ruses would be sufficient to make
amends. But the actors are right there
and with Billy Clifford as the bright
particular star , all's said. Billy is

The chorus is not large but It sings
does not merely make a noise and
prominent in it Is the sextet of nin'.e
voices who look as though they were
designed for leading and Juvenile men
but had in some way strayed Into the
chorus. They are moBt exceptional in
voice and appearance not a bald
headed one In the lot. The motor boat

"Sweet Innisfellen,"
Bernard Daly are the twin stars in the
Irish firmanent of dramatic entertain
ment to be with us at Steward's open
house on December 30th under the
auspices of the Elks of La Grande. The
play is new, but not so Mr. Daly. He
is. young, however, and has the snap
and enthusiasm of youth, and he
throws his soul Into his work. His
singing of the beautiful ballads of Old
Erin are rendered in a manner to add
much to their attractiveness. , New
and beautiful scenery and a powerful
dramatic company selected for Its es
pecial fitness promise an even, well
rounded performance. The play derives
its name from the location of Us ac
tion, which Is one of the largest isl
ands in the beautiful and historic lake
of Killarney,
