Everybody seems to be asking, In view of the present developments, what, exactly, is Nicaragua, how large la It, what are Its resources, commerce and climate? Some interesting com parisons and facts, prepared by the International bureau of American Re publics, will help to answer these pertinent natural questions. There la only four square miles dif ference between the area of Nicaragua CSl tfti State of New York. Take CaBMctfcut out of New England and ESamgaa would cover the rest of it. It is approximately one half the slite of the state of Washington. To be exact, it covers 49,200 square miles. It bus a remarkable extent of coast line on two oceans. On the Caribbean it roaches nearly SOO miles north "and south nntl on the Pacific It extends for about 225 miles. Its greatest width Is 275 mllos, or approximately the distance from Washington to New York. Its least width is 125 miles or approximately the distance from Chl fnpn to the Mississippi river. There are only about 600.000 peo ple within Its limits. Of these flve slxths are upon the Pacific or western side. The eastern, or Caribbean side lies low and Is drained by many riv ers. The only industry of this side of Nicaragua is the growing of bananas. The principal town here is that of Blueflelils. a little south of the center and having a population of some five thousands Inhabitants. It is 1.186 miles from New Orleans and 310 from Colon. The only other important rlace on this coast is Oreytown at the south ern point with a population of about two thousand, lytng near the mouth of the Sun Juan river which was to have been the course of th Isthmian Cannl if built through 'Nicaragua, and Cape (Sniclas a. On the populated Pacific slope the chief cities are .Loon, the historic and Interesting old capital, with sixty thousand Inhabitants; Managua, the present capital with 10.000; MataRaUia with 16,000; Granada, with 12,000 ana to 10,000. There is one railroad in Nicaragua which starts at Corinto and runs to Managua and thence across to Gran ada on lake Nicaragua, which is the largest inland body of water in all Latin America. If one wishes to go to Nicaragua he can take steamer 0 the Atlantic side from New ' York, New Orleans or Mobile. Going via the Pacific he will take steamer from San Francisco or from coast points from other countries. Perhaps the quickest way to reach it today is either through New Mexico by rail and. by .steamer from Sallna Cruz to Corinto, or by steamer from New Orleans direct to niueflelds. The latter journey gener ally takes about four days. If, how ever one lands on the east coast it Is practically impossible to go to 'the west coast on account of the lack of railroads and .other facilities. A com mon way. to get to the west coast is via Panama and the Pacific side. Nicaragua has a President, a Cabi net with five ministers or secretaries, thirteen departments or state, and five divisions like our . territories. Four different vaudeville acts with two fine reels of moving pictures, making a show of one hour and 50 minutes, will open 'at the Scenic to morrow night Two elegant presents will be given away next Saturday night; one the ladies and one to the gentlemen. Then on Christmas day six presents will be given away to children attending. The vaudeville people will play here half of the week and the last half a crew of artists from Baker City will come here, the teams changing places.
