For two hours last evening F. W.
Prlc entertained a packed house at
the Scenic theatre with some of the
most beautiful and Inspiring scenes
ever thrown on a canvas In this city.
In Introducing the speaker, President
Collier of the Commercial Club stated
that the lecture had been planned for
the Northern Pacific route but Gen
eral Superintendent .McMurray, O'Neil
and Van de Water had induced him to
accept their offer and travel' over the
O. R. & N., on his way to the east
Mr. Price opened up with some lo
cal scenes In which he showed off
even to the surprise of old timers In
La Grande the possibilities In apple
culture, beet culture, the sheep and
grain growing industries. He said that

ing'to build itself up. "Advertising 1s
like water for Irrigation purposes. It
must be scattered well and given plen
ty of time to soak In."
When the motion pictures of the
trip from Portland to The Dalles were
started, frequent exclamations of ad
miration were heard over the audience
as some scene that "I remember-that
place," was hurled into view by the
machine. The salmon cannery, the
Rooster Rocks, the Bridalveil Falls,
the Cascade Locks, each in Its turn
was thrown upon the canvas with a
clearness that almost excells one'B
actual view from the car windows.
Next came a few California scenes
and a general statement of the size
and scope of the state, showing a
coast line of 400 miles and an area
four times as great as that of the
state of New York. Then the machine
was switched again upon Portland
a glowing tribute to the Rose City
and views in which the lecturer pays
which he said the Lewis & Clark Ex
position first brought Into promlnance
and the A. Y . P. boosted as much as
it boosted Seattle.
The last hour was exclusively spent
with California's wonders; mountains,
canyons, rivers, etc. The magic resto
ration of San Francisco into "a city
far superior to the first one" was al
8o shown. From La Grande the lec
turer will "work his way eastward to
show the people there the wonders of
the west.
The Commercial Club feels Indebt
ed to Mr. Gardinelr for lending them
the use of the theatre for the lecture.
This action saved considerable ex
pense for the club.

Basketball has perhaps never had
such a firm grip on the athetotic ele
ments of La Grande prior to the
Christmas holidays, ' as Is has this
year. While no boy's team is ac
tually organized at the high school,
the men who will comprise that team
ar doing constant practice work
The Blue Mountain Boys have a series
of games with the older boys of the
high school and both elements are
now borrowing themselves to practice
nightly at the skating rink.
The girls of the high Bchool have
from 10 to 15 out every practice night
The M. I. A. Qulntett. which last
year played such an important nart
j in the race for the championship of
i the county, was re-organlzed last
j nlrht V. Bean was elected Captain
fid Geddes as manager. The team
will be much the same as it was last
year except , that Schorield will not
be In the line-up. The M. I. A. has a
sarae with Imbler In about two weeks.
