M"Lcan, president of the Naval Board of Inspection and Sur vey, retired for age today. Col J Shoulders for Suffragettes. New YcrS, Oct. 23 Hundreds of working vomen ranrlnir frnm rnl'r-i-a professors and artists to cooks and i waitresses, will gather at Carncglo Hall tonight to give a glorious gieet lng to Mrs. Emelixie Pankhurst, lead er and founder of the strenous suf f iragette movement in England. Tlw militant leader of the British .-.forces will not have the covmtenance of the society suffragettes of New York. HJ9. Uarence Mackay, preside-.', it the Equal Suffrage Society, fcr. decllned to appear at the meeting or introduce Mrs. Pankhurst Tonight's meeting will serve as a celebration in commemoration of the anniversary of Mrs. Pankhurst found ing of the modern suffragette move ment in London on Oct. 25, 1904. ''Mrs.- Pankhurst is now under sus pended sentence of the English cotirl, haying been placed under arreBt in June of this year for leading a suffra gette delegation to the House of Com mons to interview, the Prime Minist er. . t Mrs. Mackay.s aloofness has only slightly dampened the ardor of he occasion. The cause for her. actions are two-fold. First, to use her own words, that the reason for suffrage l i two sexes--not a fight for rights but a logical evolution of justice. And second that American manhood 1ms always treated American womanhood In such a way as "to make un feci that we will ultimately achieve our aim without sensationalism." While the English militant and their American prototypes ' are dip claimed by many among the conser vative suffragists, the Equal Fran chise Society will be practically the only logical organization unrepresen ted officially at the Pankhurst meet ing, and Individual members of It will be present The refusal of Mrs Mackay to make any compromise is unique. She will give no countenance direct or Indirect, to the infraction of law and order.. It also developed yesterday that the Equal Franchise Society alone will take no part in the local campaign , by iudorslng Mr. Hearst or any other friend of equal rights. .. " . . "I will not indorse the militant methods," said Mrs. Mackay. "The purpose of our society is to promote the welfare of women by securing the National, State and local electoral franchise for women because we be in the political and civil equality of men and women." To secure it Mrs, Mackay said it was not necessary to imitate the methods used in other countries. "It has been repeatedly" said to me Pby men In public and private life," she went on, "that when the women of the United States unite in demand, ing the vote they will get It. And I think that it Is perfectly true. What is needed to further the suffrage cause Is to give all sorts of women the opportunity of listening to speak ers who will explain what it means to all." '" In Mrs. Mackay's society there is a number of. men and she in no wise presupposes or admits antagonism in the other sex. "Most of the men I have met are apparently willing to co-operate with us and have listened to . what we have to say with courtesy and consi deration." r i ' "It has not seemed necessary in the past and 1 don't think that it will be necessary In the future for us to go out to the street corners and shriek our propaganda at the passers-by. We have but to plead our cause, with out raising our voices to the men and women who are not with us. The . .-! strongest sunragists mrougnoui me country are those women who devote their energies toward the developing i of their children to make them cltl- sens worthy of our great country."
