Steel Men In Harmony Session New York, Oct. 15 Independent makers of steel are to confer with the United States Steel Corporation and apportion prices and territory todcy. One of the. most far reaching agree ments In the history of the trade is now in contemplation. Heads ot the independent interests are to confer with the United States Steel Corporation at a meeing to be held at the Waldorf previous to a din ner tonight for Chairman E. H. Gary by heads of the independents. Willis F. King, of Pittsburg, vice-president of Jones & Laghlin, independent steel in terests, is one of the committee on ar rangements for the dinner. AVlth Mr. King are such men as E. A. S. Clarke of the Lackawanna Iron and Steel Co. of Buffalo; Charles 11. Schwab, presi dent of the Bethlehem Steel Company John A, Toping, president of the Re public Iron and Steel Company and others of note In the independent Iron and stee,l world. Not a person in the Steel Corporation is in aDj way con nected with the arrangements for the dinner for Gary and his people, it be ing alone the work of the independ ents. 1 From the love feast of the warring capitalists much of Interest to the 1- ron and steel world is expected. It is admitted in Pittsburg that one of the main objects of the testimonial dinner to Gary by the independent corporations is to show appreciation of his good work in maintaining the steel industry on an even keel throgh- out the panic times. It was Judge Gary , who on several occasions called tn the steel makers. . both great and small, and convinced them that the on ly way to prevent trouble was to cur tall production and keep the prices up. It is fully expected by Pittsburg Inter ests that the result of the meeting and dinner to be held in the Waldorf today will be an agreement between the steel corporation and all ot the ' independ ents 'a to prices and also as to territory An agreement on the price ot pig Ir on is sought by both sides. Leading Independents yet insist that the action of the steel corporation in permitting pig Iron rates to pass the $26 line pre vious to the panic beginning two years j ago had much to do with precipitating j , business depression or continuing itj after It hpd once started.
