Sick kidneys weakea the body through the continual drainage of llfe glvlng albumen from the blood into the urine, and the substitution of pois onous uric acid that goes broadcast through the system, sowing the seeds of disease. . Loss of albumen causes weakness, languor, depression. Uric poisoning causes rheumatic pain, ner vousness, nausea, cricks In the back, gravel and kidney stones. The proper treatment is a kidney treatment, and the best remedy . is Doan'a Kidney Pills. Here Is good proof in the fol lowing testimonial: . ! James M. Constant - . standing thoroughly brought on my kidney trouble and I suffered intensely. 'A customer first recommended Doan'a Kidney Pills to me, saying that . they had been, the mean of saving his life. I was in duced to try them and in a short time, I was convinced that ..they lived up to representations. Snod grass has resided, in Union county and to his efforts can be traced many of the improvements which have char acterized the progressive spirit of the valley surrounding La Grande, where Mr. Snodgrass spent the declining years of an active and well spent life. Very soon after arriving here, Sir. Snodgrass established a little general store at Oro Dell trading point, on the Grande Ronde river, a few miles from the present -site of La Grande, known as a Btage trading post located a mile south of the present site, on the foot hills where now is found a splendid residence district Active In Politics. Mr. Snodgrass entered Into Oregon politics In 1876, when he was the re publican candidate for the Btate sen ate from Union county. The district was overwhelmingly Democratic, but Mr. Snodgrass failed by only 32 votes, the smallest majority against any man on the republican ticket. In 1878 Mr. Snodgraas announced his candidacy for congress and had the solid support of a large part of Eastern Oregon for the nomination. In selecting delegates from Union county, George Baker was chosen as chairman, and to him the county looked for support for the can didacy of Mr. Snodgrass. : The trip to the state convention was a tedious one and expensive and but a tew of the delegates could go. Proxies was secured by one member and the vote of the county was delivered to hira. On the day before the trip should have been taken Mr. Baker's family suddenly became III and he could not go to the convention. The proxies were turned' over to Harvey H. Illnes, a Methodist minister and a presiding el der, who had been chosen as one of the delegates, since deceased. . ' ;On arriving at the convention Mr. besieged by a number of place hunteri who urged him to make certain pledges to them. This demand was re- fused. During the night following the conference the pie cutters waited up on Rev. Hlnes end offered him their support if he would pledge him the places that they asked for. The de mand was acceded to and at the con vention the following morning Rev. Hines voted the Snodgrass proxies for himself, securing the nomination. The minister went out on the campaign as 'aggressive as could ho imae-int. vot he was defeated overwhelmingly and Union county voted almost unanimous ly against him. ; Big Stock Venture. . Mr. Snodgrass had hlsfirst great re verse in 1880. Having lost heavily on a bond, signed for a friend, Mr. Snod grass agreed to help the friend "catch his feet" by assisting in driving 4000 head of cattle to ihe eastern markets. The stock was bought on a . contin gency, driven to Rock Creek, near the present city of Cheyenne, .Wyoming, during which time the severe winter and the shortage of food along the route caused over 3,500 to perish. The loss to the two men, largely falling on Mr. Snodgrass, was $135,000. Not to be cast down by the unfortunate venture Mr. Snodgrass engaged in merchandis ing in La Grande and had a large bus iness when the fire of July 4, 1891 swept away practically all of his prop erty excepthis land, without a dollar of insurance. . . A Lifelong Odd Fellow. Mr. Snodgrass has been a lifelong Odd Fellow, having served as grand master of the last session of the Ore !gon grand lodge before the domain of Kvashington was set off. At that time Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Brit ish Columbia comprised the domain of Oregon. The large dlstrictwas cut into parts in 1877. For eight years Mr, Pnodgrass served as a member of the La Grande city council, and for a sim ilar period served the people of the school district on the board of educa tion.'
