Balck" Covers Remarkably Largo
Territory During Derby.
RIVERHEAD. L. I., Sept. 29.
Mechanician J. Bates is dead, and
i Driver Herbert Lytle, is in a serious
condition, as a result of the ditching
of Lytle's car today during the auto-
: mobile derby over the new Suffolk
county course. Lytle was driving an
; "Apperson" and when he made the
turn ,hi machine skidded and 6hot
, into a ditch. Lytle was' thrown 50
feet, and Bates was caught under the
wrecked machine. Bates skull was
fractured, and both legs were broken.

miles at a rate of 68 and 1-4 miles an
hour .
ATTACHING CANVASS TODAY.
'New Fangled" Roofing Being Put on
The Fnir Building Today.
Workmen are today putting the
canvass roofing on the exhibit hall.
A small portion of it has been done,
and as soon as the entire building
proper is finished the roofing will be
in place. So far It has proven very
satisfactory.
Baker Boy Honored.
UNIVERSITY, Ore., Eugene, Sept.
20. George Jett. a Baker City high
3chool athlete, was elected president
of the freshman class of 1913, which
was organized today, by vote of 91
tc 46. Jett is taking the economic
course and is popular on the campus.
Ouwter Suit Begun.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Sept. 29.
The ouster suit against the Interna
tional Harvester company of America,
which is being conducted by the at
torney general of Missouri, was re
sumed today. One of the chief wit
nesses will be George W. Perkins the
New York capitalist and partner of
J. Pierpont Morgan.
W. E. Ruckman of Alicel, left last
night for Seattle.

Rumors of railroad activity are
growing more persistent and today
the report has reached the city that
some kind of a proposition from the
North Bank road is to be submitted
to La Grande this werk. It hns been
framed up by local parties that the
j requests made by the company will
! in a large measure furnish the key
to its plans.
) That the road is to cross the Blue
.mountains by Elgin seems certain.
The course to be followed from there
h ot ?o certain. One report has It
, that the road Is to follow up the
Grande Ronrte river and by that route
reach Harney county. If this line
goes La Grande will be on the natural
main line.
This plan Is supposed to be in the
minds of the mm behind the enter
prise and also the plan to build an
other rond from Elgin to Idaho and
thence to reach Hutte. Montana. It
