A force of carpenters under John
Steinbach started to work this morn
ing on the exposition building. Mr.
Steinbach said that he would put on
as large a crew as he could use to
advantage as the time for completing
the building is limited. The work
will be rushed through the week, rain
or shine.
Preparations for the exposition are
being pushed all along the line. A
call has been made for all members
of the entertainment committees of
the fair to meet tonight in the Com
mercial club rooms to put the finish
ing touches upon the program. .

After three months successful la
bors as pulpit supply for the South
Methodist church of this city, the Rev.
J. L. Ireland handed in his resignation
last night. The Rev. Mr. Ireland has
accepted a position in the Model res
taurant, and began work there today.
The conference which closed its sess
ions in Spokane last night has a new
man for the La Grande field, but his
name has not been learned by the lo-1
cal church. This information will
probably be forthcoming tonight.
The Rev. Mr. Ireland hasn't given
up the wor'- but wishes to take some
further studies in theo'ogy before ac
cepting another appointment. He will
probably put In many of his Sundays
supplying, in the county town? while
working at (he restaurant. Atvait
Ing tables he is an adept and can hold
the position and utilize his spare mo
ments brushing up along theological
lines.
It will bo remembered that when
the Rev. Ierland came -to the local
church the field was vacant and In a
run-down condition. He has made a
good fight against adverse conditions
and turns the field over to his suc
cessor In a much better condition than
that in which he found it. He is only
a licentiate and expects to be capable
of holding a position of high responsi
bility after a year of study.

WILKIE TAKES LEAVE.
In Trouble With Mike Ford And
Skldoos Before he Is Apprehended.
La Grande is shy another of its in
habitants, for Willie Wilkie has taken
leave and the officials today are firm
In their belief that he will not show
up again, for months at any rate.
Wilkie attacked Mike Ford last Sat
urday night, beating him up with av
uncial knuckles, after a quarrel on
the street. Wilkie disappeared im
mediately and it Is not believed that
he will appear here again for he is
only recently out of the penitentiary.

converes at 10 o'clock.
The special caravan from Portland,
will pass through La Grande early
Thursday morning sometime. Just
who will comprise the local pilgrims
is not yet known, but at least five au
tomobiles will be filled.
Ed Kiddle, past grand master of the
grand lodge and C. T. Bacon, com
mander of the E. O. commandery No.
6, will be the guides to pilot the mem
bership over the hills t6 the Baker
City conclave.
