Speed Limit Suspended And Traffic Withheld For a Minute or Two. Chief of Police Rayburn has receiv ed a letter from the Philadelphia Press asking that the speed limit in the city of La Grande be temporarily suspend ed when the Press Auto relay race reaches this city, in about 10 days from now. Being extremely anxious to follow the precedent being set by other cities, the Chief and Mayor Hall are taking steps not only to suspend the speed limit, but also to keep Adams avenue clear of traffic for the steamer from Baker City will end its mad dash and the Franklin that is to carry the message to Pendleton, can be handed the missive and be on its way. The entire transaction will not require more- than a minutes time, and the courtesy would be highly ap preciated. Baker City received a black eye last spring when the pathfinder car was stopped and the driver arrested for violating the speed limits. : Baker City : autolsts paid the fine, much chagrined that the police had acted In that manner. ,-V Clearing the streets would be an Innovation which not all cities do for the runners. By making Hot Lake a Blgnal bu reau, it can be ascertained Just what hour and minute the car will reach the city limits. In that way traffic will be suspended, but a ml&ure or two at the most. The message which will be carried by the runners from President Taft to President Chlldberg of the Seattle fair, follows: .. Beverly, Massachusetts, .September 4, 1909. c The president sends to the presi dent of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific ex position, greetings and congratulations on the exposition which illustrates the development , of the great Northwest. This message is conveyed by a relay of automobiles from the city of Phila delphia to Seattle, and the speed with whlch.lt Is delivered will be a good Illustration of the wonderful develop ments In road locomotion achieved in the last five years.
