Nate Zweifel is nursing a sore
shoulder and a crushed thumb, as the
result of a spill from Jack Harlan's
automobile Sunday night. Mr. Zweifel
was sitting in the rear seat and when
the machine struck a stone, he was
4 curled to the ground with much force
Miss El&ie Kennedy, of Portland,
who has been visiting at Union lor
some time, arrived in La Grande this
morning and will visit friends Hero
before returning.
Miss Elizabeth Copeland went on
to her home in Walla Walla this mor
ning, after being a guest for the night
with Miss Marjorie Silverthorn. She
returned yesterday from a visit in
Wallowa county.
Mrs. Wart Taylor of Jefferson, Iowa,
arrived last veneing and will be a
guest for a few weeks with Mr. and
Mrs. William Allison. She was ac
companied by Miss Bess Allison, who
has been east for some time.
Charles Hagerty. who some time ago
sustained injuries at the skating rink,
which resulted in amputation of one
leg, left today for Portland, where he
will be fitted with an artificial limb.
One was sent to him from Fortland
recently, but the size was not right,
and Mr. Hacerty will have one fitted
to his severed limb that will fit.
With a small crew of men H. A.
Stoner, 3eft today for Meadowbrook to
eimmenje a month's job of testing the
bedrock for the big dam. Equipment
in the way of working material and
camp outfits, were fcauled up by team
and the men will stay about a month,
or so, until the work ia finished, at
any xate.

Editor Shutt of the Joseph Herald,
who has been here the past two days,

J. W. Earls returned today from the
Wallowa country, where he had been
in the interest of his firm.
Chairman Will Church of the exhi
bition committee of the Union County
Exposition and Publicity Manager F.
B. Currey, are attending to exposition
business in Union this afternoon.
Miss Nellie Morton returned today
from Enterprise, where she had been
visiting friends for the past few
days.
Messrs McKla and Hen of Blanch-
ard, Iowa, arrived m La Grande this
morning, and are guests of Mr. and
Mrs. C. G. Green. They have been to
the Seattle fair, and are on their way
home. They will leave tonight.
Miss Allen has arrived direct from
Chicago, an expert experienced trim
mer, to be with Mrs. L. Smith during
the fall and winter millinery season.
The ladies will have an opportunity
to see samples of her work at the
opening of this establishment on Fri
day and Saturday of this week.
