Instead of diminishing the cost of water, the present water code raises the price of it to far exceed that of the old law. At the recent inspec tion of the proofs at Cove, If one should decide to contest all of the applications it would cost the ap plicant fire dollars per day all of the time that the contest was before the water board. Under the old law when the contests were taken before the Circuit court, all that the cost vr"vvr ty t A rliv wrtttt cost all of the applicants that were contested would divide up and the total cost for each applicant would amount to very little. For instance at Cove, luo appnennts have their claims in for water. If one should decide to contest a part of these it would cost the ones con tested an dthe ones who are doing the contesting $3.00 each per day. while the contest is before the board. Outside of these the fees for filing the application of the 100 applicants amounted to $1,000, or $10 per ap plication, and this added, to the cost of the contest in case there is a con test would amount to more than the water is worth. The contest fee and the application fees go into the state treasurer, and will pay the water com missioners salary for the tim,e they are on duty. The new water code with its expenses and the time involv ed is not so very pleasing nw as it was at its inauguration. Some of the protests reported yes terday were those of J. A. McNeil and Phoepe J. Anderson, owners of the McNeil Ditch company against the claims of Jennie B. Corpe, Alice C. Corpe and B. L. Batchelor: F. T. Sanford and Otto Johnson- against Alice C. Corpe and the Caldwell Ditch company against Claude N. Ogihie of Portland. The conflict in the claims of K. J. Staokland with the claims of the Caldwell Ditch com pany were adjusted and settled yes terday. Freight Conductor Left. This morning while a freight was switching an engineer evidently read his orders wrong for he pulled out of the station leaving his conductor be hind.
