are the letters:
Pendleton, Oregon, Kinsley ft Coger.
Dear Sirs:
We landed here Friday morning,
and we certainly had a hard time. I
traded my machine even np for a four
cylinder Ford. I did not beat the
fellow. Oh no, I certainly skinned
him. We shall be ready to start Sun
day morning.
We had to build roads and every
thing else to get here. I had Just got
my machine in repair when I stumped
the fellow for a trade.

From the other letter it seems that
he is having Borne trouble with his
new machine. Here la the letter:
Echo, Oregou,
Dear Sirs:
We left Pendleton at 8 a. m. and
arrived at Echo at 5:30. We had
trouble with our machine on account
of batteries. I consider that I made
$500 in the trade. We broke a hanger
on our engine, but we can fix It in the
morning In a little while. We had
some awful roads today, chuck holes
and sand half way to the hub. We ex

Four Brothers In Civil War And Mere
ot Hart
The touching story of now four
warrior brothers met at the Salt Lake
reunion as told by the Salt Lake
Tribune, is an interesting one because
chiefly it concerns two men of this
county. The story follows:
When the bombardment upon Fort
Sumpter occurred, which Inaugurated
the civil war, there lived in Marlon
Lyon county, Iowa, the Chattin family
There were four boys in. that family
and they responded to the call ot the
president and enlisted for service
defend Old Glory and to perpetuate
the union of states. They did not en
list at the same time nor in the same
regiment. Three of them were In the
infantry and one of them in the naval
service. They served through the war
These four brothers are H. C. Chat
tin, aged 16 jearB, who now resides
in Missoula, Mont.; J. F. Chattln, aged
73, of Summervllle, Oregon, and C. F.
70, of Sommerville, Oregon and C. F.
Chattin aged 61, of Elgin, Oregon. J.
F. Was a member of Company A.
Twentieth Iowa infantry: W. R. of Co.
A. Sixth Iowa infantry; C. F. of Co. E,
Forty-sixth Iowa Infantry and H. C.
on the gunboat Benton, which was at
tached to the lower Mississippi squadron.
These four brothers, reraarKamy
the war unscathed and
during their service neither was ever
ill. W. R., participated in twenty-seven
engagements and his term ot service
was four years. . ,
After the war, when they returned
to their homes, they separated. Two
of them, W. R., and C. F., started west
for Oregon. This was in 1867. They
drove overland and came via.. Salt
Lake. Here they camped for several
days, their camping place being emi
grant corral. That was forty-two years
ago. They continued their treek to
the Northwest and both settled In Ore
gon. H. C, the oldest of the four went
to Ohio and four years ago got the
western fever and migrated to Mon
tana. J. F., remained in Iowa and lo-
