That the demand for railroad em
ployes created by the construction
work on the rival lines being built
up the Deschutes is being felt by the
O. R. & N. is evidenced by the fact
that it has been announced that the
company is offering a bonus to the
employes who remain m the Bervice
of the company up to November 1.
The bonus applies only to those eni
plpyed in the track department, af
fecting all section ana extra gang
crews.
The bonus consists of a cent and a
half for each working hour for eich
man between now and November 1,
on condition that the man remains in
the employ of the company until that
date. This equals an advance in
wages of 15 cents a day.
It is thought that the company is
taking this means of granting the
men an increase in wages without
seeming to have yielded to the de
mand. At present the schedule of
wages paid is as follows:
Japs, $1.40; Greeks, Hungarians and
Italians, $1.50, white men, $1.50.
