La Grande was soundly spanked yesterday by the Cove cherry pickers in a listless game at Lincoln play grounds. . The fracas was error be smirched and characterized by but little real classy ball. La Grande started out nicely. George who was on the, hilltop throughout the game, morgued Walters the fleetfoot right off the bat, and did It twice more, Carter flew out to Alstott and the side retired when Proe handled Steven's hit handily, spelling death for the runner at Wood's station. La Grande came to the bat with Stoddard lead ing off, and though he flew out to third base, and George was wigwag- S?d b"??t to th b""h tw hm timnlr on the three strikes path, Proe warm ed things up with a stiff two bagger. Bradley followed with a single and Proe scored on Cotner's long drive to right field. From then on the game commenced to lag and wild heaves, boneheaded base running, bad coaching at bases, juggling and the like made the con test anything ' but classical. Cove held together quite well until the fourth when Bradley scored on a comedy of errors, and Cotner was. thrown out at the home plate on a close decision. From the grandstand it looked like Jack had missed it, but Cotner was really out by a nar row margin. In the elgth a batting rally cheered the fans up a wee bit. Cotner, Clark and Woods each got safe bingles, and these . augmented by errors, gave La Grande three runs. But the looseness that broke out oc casionally is told in the eight canto when without a single hit Cove tapp ed the pan four times. It was no use, Cove had La Grande hooked on and the spasmodic fits of good playing could not hold out long enough to win out. George the stellar mound artist, had fairly good control, throws a swift ball and all that, but got liUlo support on bases, and he soon quU throwing to any of the station.) to to make them hug in. Wit 1 La Grande playing its customary ball, George would do very well on the pivotable position. Score by Innings. H. EICHENBERGER, (July 20, Aug 20) " La Grande. Union and Baker City's baseball teams have gone up In smoke and from now on the Eastern Oregon league . will be composed of four clubs, Elgin, La Grande, Cove and Huntington. The Baker City bubble was anticipated to burst any time, as the team had the rather unusual dis tinction of playing 12 straight games without a single victory. The surprise of the day however, is the action ot Union which held a position in the first division of the league, and to all appearances was playing a fair game ot ball. It has been known for some time that there was trouble brewing In the ranks of tha tAm. end It cams to a climax yesterday, when the manager was unable to muster a crowd sufficient In strength or size to cope with Elgin. It is said In Union today that the team died without a struggle, as the members went each his own direct way on and the citizens themselves were unaware of the raptd strides toward disbandment taken by the team. , It Is supposed that after a few weeks a team will be resurrected to play unscheduled games, but at the present time, the league team is up In smoke with no information as to when the smoke will be reconverted into a team. Baker City's departure is not la mented in the least. The prearrang ed schedule Is of course void, and Manager Grant Lincoln has written to the other three clubs for informa tion as to another schedule. It is probable that one will be arranged before next Sunday so that the four club teams may continue. Just Arrived. Large shipment of electric irons.
