Visiting Oliian Saved From Death by . Operation. FALLS FROM BARS AT NORTH POWDER AND DIES OF FATAL INJURIES. Leaves Large Family of Sons In The Region of N'orth Powder. L. S. Williams, aged 75 years and well to do, was killed at North Powder yesteday forenoon by a fall from a high scaffold on which he was work ing while constructing : a barn for James Dalton of North Powder. A defective plank in the scaffolding pre cipltated,hlm to the ground with such force that he died soon after. The fall occurred at 8 o'clock In the morn ing. He struck a rock headforemost, and was picked up In an unconscious condition. He was given all the med ical attention possible, but died at noon. i His energetic disposition is respon sible for his death. His financial stand did not require activity along so hazardoua lines but he was always anxious to be active. He is well known in La Grande, North Powder and Baker City, having lived in the last named city for sev eral years. He is survived by several sons who live in the region of North Powder. Pitted against death, a special train in charge of Jack Heuhan's crew early this morning raced from En terprise to the La Grande hospital in a tussel with grim death's advances on Mrs. Forsythe, aged 55 years, of Ohio, who has been in Enterprise visi ting her sister, Mrs. E. J. Forsythe. Last Saturday the Ohian was stric ken with appendicitis of the worst kind, and grew rapidly worse. At 4:25 this morning a chartered train started toward La Grande bearing the dying patient with It. in charge or Doctor Anderson of Enterprise,, and the lady's brother-in-law, E. J. Forsythe. At 7:30 the special reached La Grande and at 9 o'clock the op eration was performed. At noon Doc tor Anderson and N. Molitor of this city, who assisted the Enterprise phy sician, asserted that immediate dan ger has been passed. Gangrene had Bet in the effected parts, making the case all the more serious. Hopes . for recovery are now held out, and unless complications Bet in. Mr. Anderson will return to his home city tomorrow. Seek ing a divorce, Mrs. James Wyrel, wife of a Los Anegeles real estate dealer, today stated that she had not heard her husband's voice for 10 years, un til he ordered her to leave the bouse. She Btated they lived together through a long period without any oral com munication. A small daughter con veyed such messages as were neces sary between the parents.
