" . ; -' La Grande and this part of the valley Will " be well represented at Pioneer Day, which Is to be held on .the 22 of this month Rt Imbler. These annual gatherings of the Pioneers, their sous and daughters and frienda is looked forward to each year with a great deal of pleasure. The good citizens of Imbler are doing every thing in their power to accommodate the hundreds of people who will be there, . . ., .' iX - The county court is to be cotiiiiieii dea for the activity in attempting tc enforce the laws regarding the de struction of weeds, which if let run wild will destroy the productiveness of large acres of our best land. The majority of farmers and property ow ners realize the danger and are keep ing their property clean, but often an - adjoining neighbor by careless ness lets hts weeds go to seed and not only seeds his own land but large acres surrounding him. Grande Ronde valley is not naturally over ridden and a little care by all will soon wipe out the weed problem. ' The county court at its lam session decided to make a change In the man ner of handling the county poor, when the new county building on the Poor Farm is completed, and that Is no aid w(lt be granted by the court unless those receiving aid rssltle "at the coun ty Institution. . The court knows that it ; can make qulte- a savins by' this method.' . When tbe new building Is nlslued ; and the fewr- general fm provenlents are constructed, the Poor Farm will 'provide- a' comfortable home for tho inmates. Not a few of the county, charges can help ' con siderably towards earning their sup port by working in the gafdMi und or chard. '' . ' ' v.'; , --Si4 The next big coilnty attraction will be the fair this fall, The plan will j be entirely hew for this section, but by referring to those localities where 1 similar methods have proven success ful there is every reason to believe that we as a county are entering npon an era where our county fairs will be looked forward to with pleasure and the purposes of such institutions realised. It Is simply up to the busl aess men of La Grande, In a very large measure, to make good. Other cities have and ao will we. The first steps secure the hearty co-operation of the entire valley and this we be lelve will he easily accomplished when they begin to know what La Grande la going to do and , what is expected of them. It will require a little campaign , of education. , All radical changes do and were It not for tiiese advanced steps, progres sion would be Impossible and retro g ration follow. The new fair idea is progressive, and when the books are closed It will show thousands of ad- ' missions in excess -of prior atten dance, it will be much less expensive more compact and will permit fea tures that heretofore were not ' pos sible. .
