SOON HAVE About half of the pipe ordered by the city for' that 'section of La Grande along O randy avenue which' has pe titioned for water mains, has been laid by Water Superintendent Gilman, and will soon be at the disposal of the subscribers. The water facilities at this time are limited in that section and - completion of the mains will be awaited with added interest due to the coming summer heat. ARRANGE mm Every member of the fire depart ment is requested by Fire Chief .Toiiea to report at the central house tomor row night when it will be definitely decided how many and what compan ies of the department will enter hose teams in the races for the celebration. The chief Is imperative in his call. (It seems doubtful that there will be any outside teams, In these races, but fully as interesting events will be ar ranged beween the different companies at the coming meeting. Cooked Food Sale. A stranger, Joseph Caplfn, who Is working up the picture business In this city was arrested this afternoon on complaint of H. J. Ritter of the Rlt ter studio, and given a hearing be fore Recorder Cox for using profana language. The plaintiff and the war rant allege that Caplin went Into the Ritter studio thoroughly angry Ike cause of an advertisement in a local paper which Caplin interpreted to be derogatory to his business In the quiet word-battle that en sued in the studio, Ritter was-triued an unprintable name, in the hs&rhig of Mrs. Ritter. This the defendant ad mitted to the chief when the arrest was made. The only witnesses called by the plaintiff were Mr. and Mrs. Ritter. The defendant was found guilty and fined $15. The matter of appeal was taken under consideration by the de fendant and his attorney George T. CtMiirau. - '. . LOCALSHOPS ARE CLOSED Two machinists, two boiler makers and two wipers constitute the force at the railroad shops' today and will again tomorrow., July 1st is the end of the fiscal railroad year and it is the desire of all the officials to make a good showing and therefore all of the employes have been given a two-days layoff. All of the reports for the past year are being prepared and other uecessary work will be done which will wind up a very busy year for the local shops. The shops will start up again on July 1st, with a full force. horse m Ralph Chinault,-is suffering with severe bruises today, as the result of an effort to be patriotic. He was grooming one of; his father's valuable horses In anticipation of . making a good showing in the parage, and that Is the last that he. remembers con cerning the grooming. When he re gained his senses, after having been knocked about and kicked severely, by the unshod horse, he had been re moved to his room and a physician had been called. He was unconscious over two hours, but Is now sufficiently recovered from the injuries to be out with several bandages on his face and body. Important Notice. Finn has brought n one taken of the city 24 years ago, showing the few scattering houses which then consti tuted the city of La Grande. Tne two picture show the development ct the city tn less than a quarte of a century.
