J. H. Hutchinson returned from
North Powder Monday, where he had
been for several days Investigating
the conditions of crop in that coun
try- Mr. Hutchinson pronounces the
crop outlook in that country the fin
est erer. and saw much grain there
that he estimates will run fifty bush
els to the acre. The rains of last
week put the finishing touches on the
crop prospects in that country, and
a bountiful crop now seems an abso

Father J. M. Whyte has tendered
his resignation as priest of the local
Catholic church, and his successor.
Father Alden of Ontario, is expected
to arrive tonight, to take charge of
the local parish.
The immediate cause for Father
Whyte's resignation and temporary
retirement from the church field, is
due to his failing health. He Is now
at Hot Lake in a critical condition due
to a collapse of his nervous system,
and as soon as his health will per
mit, he will take his departure for
California in an effort to rusticate In
the milder climes. During the past
three weeks he has been unable to
attend to his manifold duties here.

La Grande loses a potent worker in
religious lines. Father Whyte com
pleted his fifth successive year as
priest here, in April, and during that
time he has molded friends untold in
and out of the Catholic church. Those
who know the father casually or in
timately will affrm that few men
command the education and have the
same broadness of mind on any sub
ject, religious or otherwise. His gen
ial smile and sunny countenance will
be missed throughout the city.

Central Hose house. The work was
done last evening by the plumbers,
who are members of the company
and as the material was furnished at
cost, the expense of the new treat is
trifling. Double colls have been at
tached to the stove already In the de
partment house, and a large tank Is
connected with it, in such a way that
five minutes after the fire is going In
the stove, the showers are ready
with hot or cold water.
The Innovation was given Its maid
en test last evening and every mem-
I ber of the department Is today highly
delighted with the affair.' It Is es
pecially desirable for after a strenu
ous fight with fire, the members can
take a shower bath without any
trouble. , .
